It dissolves easily in unsaturated polyesters and epoxides and has minimal effect on mechanical properties such as impact, tensile and flexural strengths. Since it has complete compatibility with the polymer, it does not exude to the surface. The third alternative is the use of alumina trihydrate which has the advantage as a flame retardant of requiring heat to reduce it to alumina and of producing steam as a by-product which also helps to dampen down the flames. The one problem is that the greater the loading of trihydrate, the greater the viscosity, but correct choice of a blend of two materials makes it possible to lower the viscosity in a moulding compound. The proprietary compounds mentioned in this item are marketed through Croxton & Garry in the U.K. Reinf. Plast., 1986, -30, (Dec.), 349,352.
RUST INHIBITOR FOR PLASTICS
When metals are used as inserts or in conjunction with plastics mouldings, it may be necessary to incorporate a corrosioninhibiting compound. The Northern Instruments Corporation has developed a compound, the first of its type, which can readily be incorporated into plastics during processing to inhibit corrosion of any such metal components within the moulding. It works through a contact and vapour process and is said to have a life expectancy of at least six years. Designated ZEERUST can be blended into polythene or polypropylene before thermoforming, injection or blow moulding without special processing needs negative effects on machinery. Its potential uses are in retail and industrial components for anything that stores or holds ferrous metal objects. Plast. in Build. Constr., 1986, -IX, (Dec.), 4
PREDICTING COLOURANT AFFINITY FOR ENGINEERING PLASTICS
A paper given at the 44th AMTEC Conference in 1986 discussed the physical and chemical aspects of the colourant itself, related additives - such as stabilisers, antioxidants, flame retardants, and the polymer matrix, that relate to colour fastness properties and the stability of the system overall. The criteria for performance used to predict positive and negative effects are considered and the steps for predicting affinity or compatibility of a colourant in a resin-additive system identified. ADDITIVES SURVEY
A general survey is given of fillers and additives including those used for the modification of polarity and light transmission. Also included are biocides and fungicides as used in polymers. Rev. Plast. Mod., 1986, 51, (3601, 727-34
