H e died a t B u c k i n g h a m Palace on M a y 6, a n d w a s lald to rest in St. George's Chapel, W i n d s o r , on M a y 20. A g r e a t a n d sincere m o u r n i n g has filled t h e land, for w e h a v e lost a gracious S o v e r e i g n w h o has served his E m p i r e in wisdom, d e v o t i n g exceptional qualities of m i n d a n d h e a r t to t h e c o n d u c t of public duty, a n d dedicating tireless energies to the w e l f a r e of his people. K i n g E d w a r d ' s s y m p a t h i e s w e r e broad, his k n o w l e d g e w a s extensive, his i n d u s t r y n e v e r flagging, a n d w i t h a l a j u s t a n d g e n e r o u s kindliness, aided b y a g e n i u s for t a c t f u l dealing w i t h m a n k i n d , m a d e h i m n o t only an ideal King, b u t a sagacious L e a d e r of Men. King E d w a r d has nobly w o n the right to be k n o w n for all time as The Peacemaker, b u t he will also be remembered as an u n d a u n t e d Crusader against the insidious invaders of the health of his people. The Campaign against Tuberculosis owes much to the wise and enthusiastie support of tIis Late Majesty. Since the d a y when, as Prince of Wales, he asked, regarding consumption, the stimulating question: ~" I f preventable, w h y not p r e v e n t e d ?" King E d w a r d has laboured diligently to provide the answer. B y his instrumentality the King E d w a r d VII. S a n a t o r i u m was established at Midhurst, and institutions f o r tuberculous subjects in other parts of the Empire bear his name. He t o o k deep interest in Queen Alexandra's generous gift to the London Hospital, w h e r e b y the benefits of the Finsen light w e r e made available for sufferers f r o m l u p u s ; and his support was extended to the newlyconstituted R a d i u m Institute. No worthier Memorial could be discovered w h e r e b y the great gifts of our late King shall be r e m e m b e r e d t h r o u g h e0ming days, t h a n b y the establishment of adequate measures b y means of which the tuberculous and tubereulously disposed m a y be saved f r o m the pestilence t h a t walked in darkness. To Queen Alexandra we tender s y m p a t h y in her bereavement.
