Hitachi releases IowA low-power version of the 68000 has been announced by Hitachi. Maximum power dissipation of the 68000Pis 0.9 Winstead of 1.5 W a t the normal operating frequency of 8 M H z , says the Japanese firm.
Hitachi says its version of the 68000 uses only 60% as much power as the original.
Despite the chip redesign to achieve this power reduction, Hitachi maintains that the device is operationally a direct equivalent to previous versions of the 68000. It is also still made in NMOS. Because of the lower heat generated, the chip can be packaged in plastic. The full-size 64-pin dual-inline package (DIP) is a plugin replacement for earlier models, says Hitachi. There is also a version in a O4-pin plastic 'shrink' DIP. This is about the same size as a conventional 40-pin package, with a pin spacing of 1.78 mm, (Hitachi Electronic Components (UK) Ltd, Hitec House, 22•-225 Station Road, Harrow,

STD card handles Iong-di nce use Two STDbus CPU cards and an STDbus processor card have been announced by US firm Pro-Log. The 7842 Z80A-based CPU card allows communication at up to 1.2km, says the firm, by allowing users to dedicate one channel (RS422) for long-distance or network applications. The other channel is used for a typical RS232C terminal, printer or other device. The 7842 is designed as a standalone system. It supports asynchronous, byte-synchronous and bit-synchronous protocols. It has onboard dual UART serial I/O, two programmable counter/timer channels, and four memory sockets that accept up to 128kbyte of EPROM or RAM. The 7862 CPU card has two Jedec-standard memory sockets for up to 72 kbyte of onboard memory. There is also an RS232C serial port, and a timer for software delays and timed interrupts. Both the 7862 and the 7861 processor card can address up to 64kof I/O ports and can support up to 1 Mbyte of memory. The 7861 has five byte-wide memory sockets that handle up to 136kbyte of onboard RAM or ROM. The card is code compatible with the Intel

8086 CPU. It provides STDbus control signals, buffering and threestate control of address and data lines. (Pro-Log Corp., 2411 Garden

ATE tests mixed-legic and military PCBs Automatic tes~ equipment fo~ VLS[ boards has been launched by US-based Teradyne. The L210 is designed to [e.,,t multiprocessor boards with custom or semicustom circuitry, commercial VLSI-based boards with mixed logic families hybrid and discrete analogue circuitry. It can also do full specification testing ot military-specification subassemblies, says Teradyne. The L210 tests boards that need up to ~024 1{I MHz incircuit pins. To do this n uses combinatorial node switching of D4 channel cards which multiplex 12 channels to 126 pins. D5 channel cards allow dedicated functional board testing on up to .,~,6 channels. Test functions performed by the L210 include ti~e algorithmic pattern processor, state-sensitive trace. electronic knife, and autornatic bu~ cycle emulation. The system al~o uses system-resident pattern iibrar,/ modules. The L210 has a 4 Mbyte main processor memory backed up by 4 5 6 M b y t e ~,4 Winchester dis( storage and a 26-~ 26 Mbyte fixed/ removable c;~rtridge disc system with optional communication~
Interlace connect A device to interconnect RS232C and RS422A has been built by Newport Components of the UK. The NM422A provides one receive and one transmit line. Two lines control the receiver and driver on the RS422A interface. They can be connected to form a single-direction control. The NM422A runs on power from a 5 V source, the DIL package has a 9 mm mounting height and measures 17 mm × 25 ram.The pin row spacing is 0.5 in and pin pitch 0.1 in.
