FDA approval for furnace-type D&C Black No 2 for cosmetics The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has granted permission for the safe use of D&C Black No 2 (a highpurity furnace-type carbon black, subject to FDA batch certification) as a colour additive in various cosmetics, including: eyeliner, brush-on-brow, eye shadow, mascara, lipstick, blushers, rouge, nail enamel, makeup and foundation. FDA approval for BASF’s phthalo green for food-contact polymers The FDA has also granted specific approval to BASF for its Heliogen Green K-9360 pigment for use in plastics and polymers for food contact applications, so long as the plastic is not used at temperatures above 70° C. Heliogen Green K-9360 is a phthalocyanine green (Pigment Green 36), with excellent heat resistance, lightfastness and weathering resistance, and it can be used to colour plastics to a brilliant yellowish tone, with very high colour strength. BASF claims to be the only supplier of Pigment Green 36 which has so far been granted FDA approval.

stabiliser, with zero lead or zinc content. PVC containing Greenstab retains its weather resistance, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The organic commodity ingredients within Greenstab have good regulatory compliance and toxicological profiles and they have also been approved for food-contact applications. Greenstab gives better thermal stability and colour improvement in PVC articles, without requiring additional heat modifiers to raise the softening point of PVC. The mechanical properties of window profiles made with Greenstab fulfill normal industrial standards and the impact resistance measured according to DIN 53753 at 0° C and at 23° C show values that are at least as good as calcium-zinc systems. Compared with conventional products, the amount of Greenstab needed to stabilise PVC in order to achieve equivalent thermal, mechanical and weathering properties is much lower. The heat stability of Greenstab is said to be higher than that of lead or calcium/zinc systems, therefore offering a high processing window without lowering the Vicat temperature. PVC wall coverings and flooring for indoor applications can also be made with Greenstab. Greenstab has good compatibility during recycling with other stabiliser systems (such as lead, tin or calcium-zinc based additives) and no interactions occur with any of these products. Holland Colours’ granular colorants for polyolefins
TECHNOLOGY Greenstab from Artemis as a substitute for PVC stabilisers based on lead or calcium/zinc There are increasingly tight health and safety restrictions on the use of conventional polyvinyl chloride (PVC), containing lead-based stabilisers, eg for pipes supplying potable water. To overcome these problems and to expand the popularity of PVC, Artemis Research has developed Greenstab as a versatile organic-based heat-

Holland Colours recently launched Holcoprill – a new colour additive range, especially designed for extruded pipes and moulded fittings made from polyolefins. The Holcoprill range includes: grey, orange, yellow, black, blue, terracotta, red and various custom-made colours. The Holcoprill products are supplied in concentrated granular form, having an average particle size of 1.0-1.5 mm. They contain either 50% organic pigments or 70-80% inorganic pigments. Given these high loadings, Holcoprill is recommended for use at
roughly half the dosage level for standard colour concentrates. The Holcoprill range is supplied in a low melting-point carrier, so the products are compatible with all polyolefins. Plastics Additives and Compounding, Nov/Dec 2004, 6 (6), 14
Merck launches Colorstream colourvariable pigment EMD Chemicals Inc (part of the E Merck group, headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany) recently launched Colorstream Tropic Sunrise, which is a multi-colour effect pigment, changing colour from green through silver to tropical red and orange, depending on the angle of observation. Colorstream T10-03 Tropic Sunrise is essentially transparent and it can be used in combination with several organic and inorganic colorants and effect pigments. Tosaf’s anti-fog masterbatches Tosaf (of Israel) has introduced a new range of anti-fog and anti-drip masterbatches for film and sheet packaging applications, including notably polypropylene cast sheets and multi-layer blown films. There are three different grades available, each offering a different rate of migration from the polymeric matrix to the surface of the packaging film or sheet – fast, medium-speed and slow. The masterbatches can be supplied in various polymer carriers, including low-density polyethylene, ethylene vinyl acetate and polypropylene homo-polymers and co-polymers. The most common application of anti-fog/anti-drip masterbatches is in plastics that will be in contact with fresh food. The new Tosaf masterbatches help to reduce the formation of droplets of moisture on the surface of the packaging film. Moisture on the film not only detracts from the appearance of the packaged food product, but can decrease film transparency to such an extent that one can no longer see what is inside the package.
