SWeNT’s multi-wall and single-wall CNT-based products to commercial customers throughout Asia. ‘Sales opportunities in several key target markets are increasingly to be found in Asia, and the need for a strong distribution partner there has become evident. Itochu is the ideal partner to help us maximize our penetration of display, semiconductor, energy storage and advanced composites markets’, explains Dave Arthur, CEO of SWeNT. The research market in Asia will continue to be served by Sigma-Aldrich. Honeywell’s Solstice liquid blowing agent approved by EPA for foam insulation
H
oneywell has announced that its new low global-warming-potential (LGWP) blowing agent for foam insulation has received final approval from the US Environmental Protection Agency under the latter’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) programme. The approval allows the company’s Solstice™ Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA) to be used in foam insulation in refrigerators, spray foam insulation for residential and commercial buildings, insulated metal panels and other applications in the USA. According to Sanjeev Rastogi, business director, structural enclosures for Honeywell Fluorine Products, no other material identified or discovered to date offers the comprehensive range of advantages – from energyefficient performance and ultra-low GWP to costeffectiveness and safety – that Solstice LBA provides. ‘We are looking forward to working with appliance manufacturers and builders who are seeking to improve their energy efficiency and environmental performance through the use of this new chemistry’, he says. The liquid blowing agent is based on Honeywell’s hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology [ADPO, December
October 2012
2011] and has a GWP of less than five, significantly lower than hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blowing agents, the company says. Blowing agents allow closed-cell foam insulation to expand, which provides the majority of the foam’s excellent insulating properties. Solstice LBA ‘provides a pathway’ for industries to become more sustainable, but also remain energyefficient and cost-effective, Honeywell comments. Several industries and sectors are already driving and implementing sustainable solutions. For example, in June this year, the US Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) released the first voluntary sustainability standard for home appliances. In the UK, Japan and many other countries, regulations are already in place encouraging the use of LGWP, energyefficient blowing agents in spray foam and construction, Honeywell reports. In addition to the new liquid blowing agent, the Solstice-branded product family includes gaseous blowing agents, stationary and mobile refrigerants, propellants and solvents based on Honeywell’s HFO technology. The products have been developed and are being commercialized by Honeywell’s Fluorine Products business, part of the Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies business unit.
