STRIALNEWS Dorr-Oliverfluidised bed expertise for Severn Trent incinerator Dorr-Oliver UK has joined Taylor Woodrow Construction (Northern) and GBE Environmental, as a team to design, supply, construct and commission a turnkey sewage sludge incineration plant for Severn Trent Water. Now under way at Roundhill, west of Birmingham, the project is the first of its kind for the company. A new fluidised bed incinerator was preferred to traditional options, such as landfill or agriculture, as the best way to meet increasingly stringent legislation for safe sewage sludge disposal.

Dorr-Oliver will take the lead in most aspects of the project’s basic process using a FluoSolids sludge incinerator. The company is responsible for the reception and storage, dewatering, conveying, drying and autothermal incineration of sludge and screenings from various Severn Trent sewage treatment works. It also includes design and construction of a complete wet effluent treatment plant to treat centrate and other process liquids, involving clarification, aeration, thickening and nitriflcation.

Cleaner air contract for AAF A contract for an air pollution control system worth more than f1.3 million, has been awarded by Rugby Cement, a division of the Rugby Group plc, to SnyderGenerals Northumberlandbased company AAF Ltd. The order covers the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a new AAF Elex electrostatic precipitator, incorporating the latest technology, for Rugby Cement’s South Ferriby works on Humberside. The new unit, which replaces an l&year-old precipitator, will be used to control exhaust emissions from the No. 3 kiln; it follows the successful commissioning of a similar AAF plant in 1989 for the No. 2 kiln clinker cooler exhaust. The new electrostatic

precipitator will handle more than a quarter of a million cubic metres per hour of hot, dust-laden kiln gases and produce a clean, safe discharge to atmosphere that complies fully with present and expected future emission standards. The key to its performance is the unbreakable tubular RS discharge electrode, which has precisely formed discharge points, located to achieve a consistent corona effect and maximum collection efficiency. It also prevents spark erosion. Manufacture of the plant will be in stainless-steel, with completion scheduled for the end of March 1993.
