Surfactants market to reach $44.6 bn by 2020 A new report by Allied Market Research, titled 'World Surfactants Market - Opportunities and Forecast, 2014-2020', projects worldwide surfactants sales to reach $44.6 bn by 2020. About three-quarters of this revenue is expected to come from anionic and nonionic surfactants. The Asia-Pacific market is projected to exhibit the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) during the analysis period, both in terms of volume and revenue. The region captured some 33% of the surfactants market in 2014, with North America and Europe collectively accounting for around 50% of the total. Household detergents (more than half the total market) and personal care are the major market segments in terms of application, while food processing is identified as the fastest-growing application area for surfactants due to their increasing use as biocides to inhibit bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses in fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and poultry. Among anionic surfactants, linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LABS) captured two-thirds of the market in 2014. Based on type, the nonionic surfactants segment is projected to grow at the highest CAGR of 4.7% from 2015 to 2020, with fatty alcohol ethoxylates the fastest-growing among the nonionics, the report finds. Smooth operators: alternatives to silicones in cosmetics A number of silicone alternatives in cosmetic products are discussed. Croda offers Crodamol STS (INCI: PPG-3 benzyl ether myristate), which delivers wetting properties, a high refractive index and a silicone-like feel ideal for lip gloss and lipsticks. Crodamol SFX (INCI: PPG-3 benzyl ether ethylhexanoate) imparts sensory properties comparable with cyclopentasiloxane (D5), as well as pigment wetting ['Focus on Surfactants', Jan 2015]. Siltech markets Silwax D02, a low carbon alkyl methicone that can substitute for D5 or cyclotetrasiloxane (D4) in cosmetics. A novel application is incorporating 5% of Silwax D02 in natural oils such as olive, safflower or soybean oil. The product lowers the surface tension of natural oils to impart a feeling similar to that offered by cyclomethicones. SurfaTech supplies CosmoSurf DDG-28 (INCI: dodecylhexadecylpropane diol/dimer dilinoleate copolymer), which delivers water resistance, barrier properties, film formation and excellent skin aesthetics in sun care formulations. Plantasens Olive LD-SP-Eco from Clariant contains coco-caprylate and hydrogenated olive oil saponifiables. Coco-caprylate is a common vegetable-sourced alternative to silicones.
