Henkel defeated in bidding contest for Wella Coty has apparently won the bidding contest for hair care specialist Wella, beating Henkel and Revlon ['Focus on Surfactants', Jun 2015]. According to 'The New York Times', US perfume company Coty has acquired a number
of beauty product lines at an auction organized by Procter & Gamble (P&G). The transactions are valued at a total of $12 bn (€10.6 bn). The acquisition of Wella means Coty will also achieve the critical mass needed to keep pace with rivals. The other acquired product lines are the Max Factor and CoverGirl cosmetics brands. P&G is continuing its $10 bn costsaving programme. Henkel had wanted to acquire Wella in 2003 but was pipped to the post then by P&G [ibid, May 2003]. In Germany, Henkel's boss Kasper Rorsted has told the newspaper 'Welt am Sonntag' that it does not necessarily need large acquisitions to achieve its financial targets. While not commenting directly on the Wella bid, he revealed that he is not entirely satisfied with the company's situation in N America (which accounts for 18% of total sales), where sales in the USA and Canada (adjusted for currency effects and acquisitions) fell almost 3% in 2014 to €2.9 bn, the only region in which sales dropped. Operating profits fell 15%. Rorsted is turning to new managers, innovations and the latest acquisitions to effect a return to growth in the USA. Persil and the Schwarzkopf brand will play a particular role, Henkel says. The two top brands recently appeared on the shelves of US retailers for the first time.
