FOCUS Laundry & home care products AISE releases new status report on European liquid laundry detergent capsules voluntary initiative The detergents and maintenance products industry introduced risk reduction measures for liquid laundry detergent capsules in mid-2013 with AISE's voluntary Product Stewardship Programme (PSP). Since then, a decrease in the number of reported accidental exposures per million capsules sold is observed in all monitored countries. The ongoing significant reduction measured >30% overall and ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the country. To better understand the underlying causes of accidental exposures to detergent capsules, AISE has been working with several Poison Control Centres (PCC) to collect specific follow-up data on accidents. The joint study's findings will be published later in the year following a PCC workshop in Sep 2015; however, AISE discloses that child-safe storage appears to be the most critical factor. Lubrizol introduces new functional polymers at SEPAWA Lubrizol Corp's new line of functional polymers for home care products received their European launch at the SEPAWA meeting in Fulda, Germany on 14-16 Oct 2015. In keeping with its innovation focus on high-value technology solutions, Lubrizol's new functional polymers enable products that enrich the consumer cleaning experience by delivering enhanced cleaning and care benefits. The new Noverite 301 Polymer is a novel softening additive for high performance in 2-in-1 liquid laundry detergents. The polymer has excellent affinity to fibres, which provides consumer-perceivable fabric softness and fluffiness at low incorporation levels. Noverite 301 polymer has no negative impact on detergency performance and can help maintain fabric moisture wicking properties, enabling softer, more absorbent towels and more comfortable performance sportswear. Meanwhile, the new Noverite 311 and 315 Polymers are foam-boosting additives for liquid dish detergents. Long-lasting foam in

the presence of organic soil loads is developed by synergistic interaction of the polymer with cleansing surfactants. Optimized polymer design allows for the creation of cost-efficient formulations with high-foam and excellent cleaning performance. The polymer line was introduced in the USA in May this year ['Focus on Surfactants', Jul 2015]. Lubrizol's booth at SEPAWA also included personal care product solutions including hair repair solutions and Sweet Escape, six simple and innovative formulations illustrating novel concepts and performance benefits for different skin care applications. Trends in laundry by 2030 The trends that will influence laundry washing by 2030 are reported. The three basic trends for new detergent ingredients are increased use of readymade ingredient mixes, increased flexibility of ingredients for new application fields and increased consumption of high-performing, fully renewable and biodegradable raw materials of natural origin with less aggressive profiles. Glycolipids, microbial surfactants of marine origin and surfactants from algal oil origin are promising ingredients that will fit the context of intensive, technology-driven use of renewable sources. They are expected to become commodities in the mid-term. Innovative fermentation products from sugars will also be increasingly used as detergent ingredients. The bio-based products will help address the issue of water pollution and limited resources.
