Hybrid seals offer economic fluid resistance Seals that have a perfluoroelastomer coating over a core of fluorocarbon have been introduced by Cimaka International GmbH of Switzerland. The seals are intended for static and ‘slightly dynamic’ applications. The combination of an FKM core inside an FFKM outer shell is intended to provide a flexible and durable seal. The FFKM shell is approximately 0.5 mm thick, and offers the advantage of protecting the FKM core from the sealed fluid, as well as

potentially also limiting the core temperature. The seal also offers reduced cost compared with a complete FFKM seal. O-rings, rectangular sections and camlock seals are available, with the option of food and pharmaceutical grade materials. Significant space savings and typically 70–80% weight reductions were key factors in the selection of compact flanges for an FPSO conversion for Prosafe at the Keppel Shipyard, Singapore. The flanges will be used to connect high pressure piping and equipment on the vessel. It will be deployed for the Tui oil field project, offshore New Zealand, off the Taranaki Peninsula. The SPO Compact Flanges from Vector International were selected for the FPSO conversion project because of the extreme space restrictions

on the former tanker, which could not accommodate traditional ANSI flange connections. Over 50 Class 1500 Flanges in a range of sizes, predominantly 8 and 10 inches, are being used in the conversion project. An 8 inch Class 1500 Compact Flange weighs only just over 36 kg, compared with 125 kg for the equivalent rated ANSI flange.
