NEW PRODUCTS IBM PC Balance Interface The power of the IBM PC can now be used to analyze data gathered with the Thermogravimetric System 113 and Recording Electrobalances made by Cahn Instruments, Inc. The Cahn IBM Data Interface plugs quickly into an IBM PC - allowing users to select data input parameters and output options. Weight and temperature data are converted to digital signals via the IBM Data Interface, which works with a flexible, user-friendly software package. Menu-driven commands provide choices for data gathering and output via printer or plotter. During the sample run, actual weight and temperature data are displayed in real time on the IBM monitor. Software is written in easy-to-use interpreted IBM BASIC to simplify user modification and custom software development. The IBM Data Interface in conjunction with Cahn equipment should be particularly useful for research food analysis. Innovative Electrode Design Avoids Blockages An Australian manufacturer of precision laboratory equipment Ionide Pty. Ltd., has developed a revolutionary new electrode that will eradicate common problems in testing the pH of substances. Ionide developed the "Intermediate Junction" of IJ electrode four years ago, in conjunction with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research
Conventional electrodes are affected by blockages which occur with the usual porous constrictions, especially when measuring substances such as meat and dairy products. Other types need to be dismantled for cleaning, delaying measurement, and blockages can cause fracturing of the electrode's glass stem during dismantling. The IJ electrode however, enables fast, efficient cleaning of blockages without sacrifice of performance. It consists of upper and lower electrolyte chambers joined by a porous ceramic plug. Recently Ionide redesigned the IJ to incorporate a gelled upper chamber which has improved stability. Unlike other electrodes the plug DOES
