Iceberg research A drifting Arctic iceberg has now operated as a research station for five years. This Soviet station, called North Pole 22, is being used to conduct radio soundings of the ice, and the under-surface is being studied by skin-divers. Study has also been made of the nature and climate along the iceberg's 22 000 km path through the Canadian Arctic archipelago, and data have been gathered on the ionosphere and on terrestrial magnetism. The project is part of the International Polex experiment, and is about to become a part of PIGAP - the first international programme for the study of global atmospheric processes, The iceberg is about 3 km square. It started at a point north of Wrangel Island and is expected to arrive back there some time this year.
