I frequently find market reports remarkable in their assessment of the powder coating industry. Most recently I have been amused by a news item published in the PPCJ (Polymers Paint Colour Journal). This fine publication can't be faulted by the press releases it receives and in turn provides to the coatings public. What caught my attention this month was a report entitled "Return of furniture manufacturing could boost wood coatings'' In it two prominent market research firms are quoted regarding the state of the wood coatings industry. As anyone familiar with powder coatings we know that powder represents only a fraction of the coatings used for wood furniture. ChemQuest estimates powder's penetration into the flat stock wood market as 1% and exclusively for MDF (medium density fiberboard) applications. Later in the report ChemQuest states that 5% of the fine furniture/kitchen and bath cabinet market is served by powder coatings, specifically UVcured types. Interestingly this 5% is dedicated to "wood widgets''. I had to Google this term. Apparently this refers to "a small mechanical device, as a knob or switch, especially one whose name is not known or cannot be recalled; gadget'' (www. dictionary.com). So UV-cured powder coatings are used to coat wooden devices whose name is not known or cannot be recalled. Nice work market research teams. It seems that the market research experts neglected to solicit any knowledge from powder coating experts. From my recollection powder coatings have been commercially applied to wood substrates for nearly twenty years. The first installations were in Plainwell, Michigan (Decorative Veneer, later DVUV), London, Ontario (Radex) and South Wales, UK (Stilexo). All of these companies used UV-curable powder as the finish for MDF based boards for a variety of end uses including office and laboratory furniture, microwave carts, store displays and signage. Since cracking the code to powder coat engineered boards like MDF both UV curable and thermoset powder coatings have been developed and used for these applications.
The UV cure powder process is fast, taking as little as 4 or 5 minutes from start to finish but requires the additional process of delivering intense UV throughout the coating. This makes curing a challenge on complex shaped parts and with certain colors. UV cure powders however provide very tough coatings due to the high degree of crosslinking inherent to its cure chemistry. Thermoset powders have been developed and are used for a variety of applications including cabinetry, store displays, doors and room partitions. These low temperature products require longer bake cycles than the UV cure types typically taking 10 to 20 minutes to complete cure at temperatures around 130 to 150 8C. Recent advances in chemistry have pushed the cure envelope to closer to 5 minutes at 125 to 130 8C. The use of infrared is integral to affording the fast cure cycles of these products. Lately one of the world's largest manufacturers of ready-to-assemble furniture has pledged to pursue the use of powder coatings across a vast array of their product lines. In addition the wood-plastic composite industry is taking a look at powder coating their manufactured boards used in outdoor applications such as decking, railing and fencing. So it appears that powder coatings are being used in a more than a few applications besides wood widgets. Maybe this is a good thing – the purveyors of traditional coating technology won't see us coming when powder coating overtakes another prominent industry sector.

Sherwin-Williams opens powder plant in Poland Sherwin-Williams officially inaugurated a new powder coatings factory in Poznan in Eastern Poland. The new production facility will manufacture the low-temperature powder coatings Powdura Sprint for wooden substrates and the two-layered powder coating Powdura OneCure. Both products have been developed to achieve higher quality, energy savings and improvements in efficiency. The new plant applies advanced production appliances and operates a completely equipped colour laboratory. The facility already came on-stream in Jan 2016 and offers access to the latest powder coatings technology to customers. SherwinWilliams already operates powder production facilities in the US, Canada, Mexico, China and now Poland. Powder coatings are extremely hard and durable and certain properties such as UV-resistance, flexibility and resistance to chemicals can be integrated into the products. The simple and fast application provides first-class results. Powdura OneCure provides increased transfer efficiency which is leading to costreductions compared to other powder coating processes. The new technology is described.
