International news Important forthcoming meetings of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) 13th International Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ICOMS) - 2 0 - 2 4 October 1997, Kyoto, Japan The Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is hosting the 13th ICOMS and extends a warm invitation to colleagues around the world to participate in this event. For more than 1000 years from 794 to 1868, Kyoto was the capital of Japan. Surrounded by mountains, it has nearly 2000 Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples and reflects an old-world atmosphere. The autumn (fall) in Kyoto is tinted with beautiful colours of Nature and the conference period is scheduled to coincide with the Festival of Ages, one of the big festivals in Kyoto. Reasonably priced hotels are available. Professor Rudolf Fries, President of IAOMS, says: "Numerous plenary sessions will guarantee that the attendees obtain state-of-the-art information. It is Clear that the 13th ICOMS will be integral to the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery and the advancement of the specialty world-wide. I look forward with great enthusiasm and anticipation to meeting you in Kyoto!" Professor Tsuyoshi Kawai, President of the Japanese Society of OMS and Chairman 9f the Organising Committee for the 13th ICOMS, says: "This is the first ICOMS to be held in Japan. I sincerely hope that it will lead to more active interchange of scientific knowledge and techniques between colleagues based in the West and those in the East. We will ensure that participants from all over the world will be able to effectively exchange their opinions. The topics of the Great Debate are disc replacement after discectomy and odontogenic keratocysts.

The official language of the Conference is English. However, Symposia, Education Conference and oral sessions may be presented in English or Japanese, with simultaneous translation. Social program A full social program has been arranged, with a welcome reception, banquet and excursions to the Festival of the Ages and Nara, the site of the Great Buddha built in 749, the largest bronze statue on earth. Accompanying persons programs include the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, printed silk and kimono show and Japanese cooking. There are also pre- and postconference tours available. XV International Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - 2001, South Africa (further details later) The International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons will co-sponsor meetings of national organisations and other bodies in the year between the ICOMS.
