PREVENTING POOL DROWNINGS

Linda R. Williams, CRNA, JD

More than 350 children under the age of 5 years drown in pools each year in the United States. Most of the drownings occur in residential pools. To help prevent or reduce this tragedy, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has developed 3 free publications to help prevent child drowning: Safety Barrier

(term ends 5/99)

Guidelines for Pools; How to Plan for the Unexpected; and Guidelines for Entrapment Hazards: Making Pools and Spas Safer. The CPSC stresses the need for physical barriers to limit access, for adequate supervision, and what actions to take if a child is missing. Copies of the publications can be obtained by writing to Pool Safety, CPSC, Washington, DC 20207; by calling the CPSC hotline at (800) 638-2772; or via the CPSC's web site at

REWARD OFFERED FOR RECALLED PORTABLE CRIBS Despite a nationwide effort since 1993 to alert the public to the recall of collapsible cribs, the cribs continue to be used, and 2 more children died in 1998. The crib design allows the top rails to collapse, entrap the child, and cause suffocation. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has cooperated with Hasbro and its subsidiaries, Kolcraft Enterprises Inc and Playskool, to offer a $120 Child Saver Reward for the return of each Playskool Travel-Lite portable crib. To get the products back, the manufacturers are mailing notices to day care centers, including notices in new products, and have posted details on Hasbro's web site: www.hasbro.com Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the cribs, to advise anyone who has the crib (eg, day care centers, baby-sitters, garage sales, or secondhand store owners) about the recall and the reward. Instructions for returning the crib and receiving the reward can be obtained by calling Kolcraft at (800) 453-7673. Additional information about the recall and similar hazards can also be obtained by calling the CPSC at (880) 638-2772, or by accessing the CPSC's web site at www.epsc.gov APRIL-JUNE 1999
