INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CATALYSIS BY ZEOLITES Ecully, Lyon 9-11 September 1980

This conference, organised by 1'Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse, attracted 150 academic and industrial research scientists from 16 countries. Three aspects of catalysis by zeolites, acid-bases catalysis, catalysis by transition metal ions, and catalysis by metals, were covered by seven plenary lectures and 30 papers presented at the conference. The subject of acid-base catalysis was introduced by lectures given by P. B. Venuto: ("Synthesis, reactions and interactions of olefins, aromatics and alcohols in molecular sieve catalyst systems"), by J. A. Rabo:("The role of electrolyte properties of zeolites in catalysis") and by C. Marcilly and J. P. Franck: ("Use of zeolite containing catalysts in hydrocracking"). Interest focussed predominantly on the ZSM-5 zeolite; in this case, shape selectivity problems predominate. The interest in the ZSM-5 zeolites (first synthetised by investigators from Mobil) is such that fundamental research in industry and at universities is growing rapidly. Many reactions have been studied, among which are catalytic cracking, conversion of methanol, isomerisation of

xylenes and alkylation of aromatics.

That part of the conference on catalysis by transition metal ions was introduced by the lecture of M. Che and Y. Ben Taarit on "Catalytic reactions induced by transition metal complexes solvated in zeolite matrices". Ions introduced into zeolites by exchange processes have physico-chemical properties comparable to those of solution species since zeolites behave like electrolytic solids. This analogy applies to reactions, catalysed by transition metal ions, such as carboxylation of alcohols and hydroformylation of olefins. Classic heterogeneouslycatalysed reactions, such as oxidation and ammonoxidation of propene and hydrodesulphurizationof benzothiophene, allow
