International press abstracts Alarm and confrontation reactions

Cactus Grandiflorus Pierre Popowski

Michel Guermonprez The author describes several reactions to stress: strategies of weakness are escape (Argentum nitricum), reactive depression (Ignatia, Aurum, Sepia, Staphysagria); depression with anxiety (Arsenicum album); obsession and phobia (Gelsemium, Natrum muriaticum, Thuja). Strategies of avoidance are euphoria (Sulphur), and seeking support from others (Pulsatilla, Kalium carbonicum); strategies of defence are: defence of one’s territory (Bryonia, Arnica), fight (Nux vomica,Llycopodium, Aurum), denigration (Platina) and manoeuvre (Mercurius, Hepar sulph). L’Home´opathie Europe´enne 2004; 5: 6–9.

Two clinical cases of Cactus grandiflorus are described: a 2 year-old girl with recurrent otitis and chronic cough. She was very angry, anxious, jealous and wanted to do everything unaided. This last symptom led to the prescription of Cactus grandiflorus, which cured. The second case was another young girl, blind, abandoned at the age of 6 months, then adopted at 11 months. She was autistic, according to three psychiatrists. She also wanted to do everything unaided, and did not like to be guided. Finally, a clinical case of Formica rufa is described: a hyperactive, indisciplined boy who always wanted to be the centre of attention. He was eccentric, rebellious, and wanted to be the leader. His rebellious character led to the prescription of the medicine. L’Home´opathie Europe´enne 2004; 4: 14–16.

Homeopathic medicines of autumn Didier Deswarte The main ‘autumn’ medicines found in Kent’s repertory are quoted: Kalium bichromicum (nasal stringy secretions, pains migrate quickly from place to place or occur in small places, alternation of diarrhoea and rheumatic pains or other physical symptoms), Lachesis (intolerance of constriction or enclosed spaces, improvement by elimination), Rhus toxicodendron (worse from cold and damp, but not found in the rubric ‘‘worse in autumn’’), Antimonium tartaricum (autumnal bronchitis in children), Aurum metallicum (autumnal depression), China and Colchicum (autumnal diarrhoea), Veratrum album (unfair treatment at work, cold sweats), Dulcamara (autumn colds or diarrhoea), Graphites (worse from cold and damp, shyness, irresolution, melancholia), and Mercurius (rhinitis, sore throat in autumn).

Bovista Philippe Colin This mushroom becomes bloated and filled, when ripe, with a black dust of spores. According to this signature, ‘bloatedness’, sense of enlargement, and flatulent distension are leading features of Bovista (Clarke’s Materia Medica). The study of the materia medica of this medicine leads to some important clinical indications. On the psychological level, Bovista is awkward, sad when alone, cheerful in company, somewhat reminiscent of Pulsatilla. ENT symptoms are similar to Kalium bichromicum, Sticta pulmonaria or Arum triphyllum: stringy discharge from nose, nose obstructed, chapped lips. Bovista may too be a remedy for laryngitis, whooping cough, asthma (from dust, of sailors going ashore). There are many neurological symptoms (vertigo, paraesthesias, awkwardness, speech and balance problems), which may suggest early multiple sclerosis. Menstrual bleeding is heavier at night, and there are various dermatological symptoms, including: fissures, pimples, pustules, boils, warts. L’Home´opathie Europe´enne 2004; 4: 17–20.
