integrated architecture to tie all its multiple product lines back to its mainframe computers. Most likely, it will operate under a continually evolving version of the MVS/XA operating system, with VM/CMS playing an important part in the user interface. Mrs will then be transformed into a modular architecture corresponding to IBM'S first series of modular mainframes. Mainframe modularity will permit IBM processors with older architectures to operate as subsystems. Minicomputers: In the near term, the System/36 will continue to be enhanced as IBM'S strategic product for departmental computing, as the System/38 and 4300 series are enhanced to serve more closely targeted markets. Frost & Sullivan expects the 8100 and Series/1 to be positioned in specialty markets away from mainstream competition. In the long run, however, the existing mini market will be satisfied through downward extensions of IaM's mainframes and upward extensions of supermicro lines. Microcomputers: Having set the industry standard, IBM now realizes its challenge is to control the strategic evolution of its PC line in a way that will both maintain its market domination and steer the PC back into the mM mainframe-oriented corporate MIS environment. Frost & Sullivan believes mM will accomplish this goal by standardizing the PC as its intelligent workstation for office

system networks. The AT product represents "Generation 2" of the PC. Generation 3, based on Intel's 80386 chip, is expected to take over in the 1988 to 1990 period and remain viable through 1995. Over the long term, IBM can be expected to focus on developing its telecommunication presence, using its new tactics of acquisition rather than internal development. Other candidates for new future specialty markets discussed in the study include microcomputer disk drives, personal computer accessories, computer maintenance and cellular radio. The 370-page study includes assessments of competitors, product line analyses, and traditional IBM strategies, as well as detailed forecasts of likely developments. The report is available for $1,800.
