1.13. INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON CHALLENGES IN AFRICAN HYDROLOGY AND WATER RESOURCES
Harare, Zimbabwe, 23 -27 July 1984@) The Symposium is convened and organized by the Ministry of Water Resources and Development and the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Zimbabwe, in co-operation with UNESCO, WMO and IAHS. The objectives of the symposium are (a) to focus on the role of groundwater exploration, data collection, assessment, resource development and management in rural Africa, and (b) to discuss problems of soil erosion and sediment transport and their effects. The languages of the symposium are English and French. The provisional agenda includes the following topics: Groundwater: (a) methods of exploration (b) data collection archiving and retrieval (c) assessment of the resource (d) management techniques. Soil erosion: (e) methods of soil erosion measurement (f) sediment transport measurement and related streamgauging (g) effects of erosion and sediment transport Q preventive techniques. Transfer of technology on measurement techniques in the above fields. Abstracts, of not more than 200 words, in English or French, should be sent to Dr. J. C. Rodda, Institute of Hydrology, Wallingford, Oxon, England, by 1 July 1983. Authors will be informed by 30 September 1983 if their papers have been accepted and how to prepare the final version of their paper, to be submitted by 1 January 1984. There will be a registration fee of approximately 150 Zimbabwe $ for delegates attending the symposium. 1.14. WORKSHOP
ON THE INTERNATIONAL
REFERENCE IONOSPHERE (IRI)
Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, 30 August-3 September 1983 In view of the revision of IRI, intended for 1984, a workshop meeting is to be held on the International Reference Ionosphere, with cosponsorship of URSI and COSPAR, in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, from 30 August to 3 September 1983. The site, in central Bulgaria, is known for the branch of the Central Laboratory for Space Research located there. According to the decisions taken at the last IRI Meeting (Ottawa, May 19821, the following subjects are of particular interest: Use of Booker’s skeleton method to obtain a unique formula for the electron density profile; Electron temperature formulae, taking into account the inter-relation with electron density; New data and compilations concerning ion composition; Particularities of the D region, including clusters and negative ions. Other contributions concerning IRI may also be accepted. Those interested should announce their contribution to the Chairman of the URSI/ COSPAR Task Group on IRI: Prof. Dr. K. Rawer, Herrenstr. 43, D-7801 March, FRG. The address for local arrangements, including accommodation, is: Prof. K. B. Serafimov, Central Laboratory for Space Research, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 1 bd. Russki, Sofia 1000, Bulgaria.
