INTRODUCTION The Research Group on Surface and Colloid Phenomena in the Oral Cavity was created under the auspices of the Council of Europe in 1975. The Group was formed with the objective of bringing together specialists from various disciplines in order to promote the cross-fertilization of ideas and expertise, and to encourage international cooperation in the area of dental research referred to in the Group’s title. Of particular concern to the Group are the mechanisms of plaque formation, growth and inhibition, since only when these mechanisms are understood, it is believed, will it be possible to put the prevention of dental caries and peridontal disease on a scientific basis. Although with the help of the Council of Europe’s secretariat, accounts of the Research Group’s activities were recorded and distributed to interested parties in newsletters, it was decided in 1977 to publish the papers presented at subsequent meetings. With generous financial support from the Section of Education and Research of the Swedish Dental Federation the seminar held at the Ystad SaltsjCibad Hotel, Sweden, on 28-30 March, 1977 was published in the Swedish DentalJournal Vol. 1 1977, pp. 205-272. The following papers are based on communications presented at a symposium held by the Research Group in Groningen on 18 and 19 May, 1978. (A selection of papers has already The Group wish been published in the previous issue of Journal of Dentistry, 7,148-179.) to express their thanks to Professor Arends and his colleagues for their help in organizing the meeting, to the authors for their contributions, and to the participants in the discussions which followed the presentation of each paper. The provision by the Council of Europe of administrative support and the helpful cooperation of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dentistry are both gratefully acknowledged.
