Gondwana Newsdesk Although Africa is now largely isolated between the Atlantic and the Indian oceans, for much of the Phanerozoic time, it formed the heartland of ancient supercontinent of Gondwana and before that, an integral part of earlier Neoproterozoic Supercontinent known as Rodinia. Many African Geoscientists have played key roles in Gondwana Research and it is quite clear that African Geology can not be fully understood in isolation of the once surrounding gondwana fragments. To encourage wider research in Gondwana Geology and the global processes that shaped the African continent, it has been decided to extend the coverage of the Journal ofAfrican Earth Sciences to include the once neighbouring continents of Gondwana. The intention is to increase the proportion of papers published in
the Journal on the broader issues of Gondwana Geology and of relevance to African continent. There will also be a new Gondwana Newsdesk which will incorporate a Calender of Events, News Items and Reports on Gondwana conferences, field trips and IGCP projects. Letters, commentaries and critical discussion related to Gondwana topics will also be considered for publication in a Discussion section of each Gondwana issue. Invitation for the Membership of IAGR International Association for Gondwana Research (IAGR) is the association of scientists who intend to be of some use for the Gondwana research centered to Earth Sciences. The provisional membership fee for IAGR is 20 US $ for scientists from developed countries and 5 US $ for those from developing countries. The Gondwana News Letter (twice a year) is sent free to members, who also may have privilege in getting information and special services related to Gondwana Research (e.g. concession rates for the association journal (Gondwana
Research, 4 issues per year), memoirs, and publications by the Gondwana Research Group). We would like to request you to enroll the membership for the IAGR at this stage. The application for membership should include; Name, date of birth, affiliation, address and field of scientific activity including important contributions. For further details please contact: Prof. M. Yoshida, whose complete address is given in the last page of this Newsletter.
Special Issue on “Mineralization in Gondwana” “Gondwana Research”, the official journal of the International Association for Gondwana Research, will bring out a special issue on “Mineralization in Gondwana” during late 1998. It lays special emphasis on the mineralization and related phenomena in the crustal fragments of the Gondwana and across geological boundaries. Comparative studies are
preferred to those of a more local nature. Address your contributions to Prof. C.B.Dissanayake, Guest Editor, Dept of Geology, Universityof Peradeniya, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka before 30th Sept.’97. Fax: 94-8-388018, E-mail:
