Silicone adhesive developed for use in plastic oil pans
W
acker, the Munich-based chemical group, has developed, in collaboration with the society for innovation (INPRO), a new silicone rubber that is specifically designed to meet the demands of the automotive industry. Elastosil 76540 A/B, a room-temperaturevulcanising RTV-2 liquid silicone rubber, can be easily machine applied, cures at room temperature and has excellent resistance to oil, heat and blow-by gases. It enables plastic oil pans, or sumps, to be assembled inexpensively and creates durable structures. This RTV, two-part silicone, is extremely robust. Even when immersed in organic liquids, such as engine oil, at over 100°C, the silicone sealant shows hardly any swelling and retains its mechanical strength. Consequently, it bonds extremely reliably and durably to a variety of polymers and metals. The use of silicone adhesives and fewer screws could reduce the cost of an oil pan by an impressive 25%. According to INPRO, this adhesive offers optimum bond strength and leak-tightness when used with the ideal material combination of aluminium and Ultramid – a polyamide supplied by the BASF chemical group. INPRO is a joint-venture company that comprises BASF, Daimler, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, Volkswagen and the Federal State of Berlin.
