munism “will never win in Mexico nor will it expand in our hemisphere.” However, he said, “I believe it is the responsibility of the Mexican press to work to make this danger disappear completely, and since communism cannot be defeated with weapons but with conviction, the press must contribute to prove and convince our people that within the system in which we live, there is a true possibility and a hope of improvement for all. “We have nothing against the peoples behind the Iron Curtain. But we do have the obligation of defending ourselves against their infiltrations, simply because we are a freedom-loving people, because our system as it is clearly outlined in the Constitution of 1917 and carefully observed by the Government of Mexico, has marked our road, which is the only one considered by us as the most convenient toward a better life.” -Press of the Americas, No. 128 (July, tg63), p. 3.
The Cong+Through
Red Spectacles
V&or Mayevsky, Pravda’s Observer, on June 29 discussed the Congo situation in that official party organ. He wrote in part: “ . . . The main cause of the crisis in the Congo was the intervention of the imperialist powers in the internal affairs of the country. The conspiracy of the Belgian colonizers grew into the actual conspiracy of the entire aggressive North Atlantic bloc against the Congo, and the United States began to play the most important role in that. . . . It was in this that the essence of U.S.A.‘s African policy manifested itself . . . to crowd out the old colonizers, and where, for one or another reason, it cannot for the time being succeed, it would make a deal with them for the joint plunder of African nations. The American monopolies see themselves as the heirs of all the West European empires on the African continent -British, French, Belgian, Portuguese. And U.S.A.‘s NATO allies are increasingly convinced that this organization furthers the realization of Washington’s farflung plans. “As a result of the prolonged skirmish in Katanga, U.S.A. forced England, France, Belgium to yield a number of positions. . . . The retreat of the West European ally-rivals of the U.S.A. is not, however, a capitulation. It is a new collusive agreement behind the backs of the Congolese people and to the detriment of its vital interests. In fact, the NATO countries have agreed to a form of ‘protection’ over the Congo. . . . “U.S.A. ruling circles, straining themselves to the utmost, cry about ‘freedom’ in Africa, in West Berlin, in South Vietnam. The true face of American ‘freedom’ is in Alabama, where Negroes have police dogs set on them, are thrown into prisons, beaten and murdered. Racists at home, American preachers of ‘freedom’ have been and continue to be a pillar of racism in Africa, colonizers, oppressors. “Africa, the Congo know this. . . .”
