J a p a n e s e UP resin production falls JAPANESE p r o d u c t i o n o f unsaturated polyester (UP) resin, of which a b o u t 75% is used in composites, is falling, according to Plastics Industry News. Production in the years 1989 and 1990 was, respectively, 257 700 tonnes and 273 181 tonnes. In 1991 production fell to 263 297 tonnes. The projected figure for 1992 is 261 0 0 0 t o n n e s . T h e s e drops were caused by the recession affecting J a p a n and other countries. A b o u t 40% of t h e UP resin u s e d in reinforced plastic is used in the construction industry, 13% in

transportation, mainiymarine craft, and 27% is used in other applications such as w a t e r tanks, pipes, a n d sports and leisure products. Takeda Chemical is starting production of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP). using phenolic resin. Sumitomo Bakelite is producing a phenolic resin sheet moulding compound (SMC). C o m p a n i e s considering entering into production of phenolic resin include Hitachi Chemical, D a i n i p p o n Ink & Chemical, S h o w a Kobunshi and Gunei Chemical.
