Journal of Pediatric Urology (2016) 12, 334
Editorial
Join the discussion on Twitter! The Journal of Pediatric Urology would like to welcome our readers to the Twitter revolution that has undertaken other medical and surgical subspecialties. Twitter is a social media platform which allows users to share information with their followers in 140 characters or less (called a tweet). In addition to text, a tweet can contain links, pictures, and now even polls. Twitter provides a platform to share news about late breaking scientific articles (in the form of a tweet) and allows users to repost the tweet to share it with their own followers (retweet). Users can also engage in discussion by replying to the original tweet or to another user’s comment. As such, Twitter has been widely adopted by academic journals in adult urology (ie. European Urology and Journal of Urology, to name a few) and by adult urologists and trainees alike. In December of 2015 the Journal of Pediatric Urology went live with the @JPUrology Twitter account. In less than one year, we’ve gained more than 500 followers, tweeted about more than 100 articles and generated meaningful discussion surrounding topics such as open vs minimally invasive surgery in pediatric urology. Twitter is freely available to all and easy to access. It can be accessed online via the website Twitter.com and on any smartphone by obtaining the Twitter app. All you need to create an account is an email address and you can set up a profile by creating a twitter handle (for example the JPU twitter handle is @JPUrology). We welcome and encourage pediatric urologists, fellows, residents and all interested in participating in the pediatric urology discussion to join Twitter and follow us @JPUrology! To more effectively archive and
follow our JPU discussions please use the hashtag #JPUro as part of your tweets. This will organize all tweets using the #JPUro hashtag to allow for future searches. For those not familiar with Twitter, here are a few helpful terms: Tweet- A message on Twitter which is composed of 140 characters or less. Retweet- When a user reposts a tweet from a different account to share with their own followers. Follower- Anyone who subscribes to your account. Anytime you post a tweet, it will come up as part of your follower’s feed. Feed- Tweets from accounts you choose to follow will show up on your Twitter homepage as your live feed. You will not see tweets from accounts you have not chosen to follow. Hashtag- The # symbol is used to tag a keyword which organizes all tweets using the hashtag (ie. #JPUro). We look forward to your discussion on Twitter! Diana Cardona-Grau, MD * Social Media Editor, UCSD/Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, USA *Correspondence to: D.
