Journal of Dairy Science 1984 LON D. McGILLIARD, Editor Animal Science Michigan State University East Lansing48824

The American Dairy Science Association published 376 technical articles averaging eight pages in Volume 67 of the Journal of Dairy Science. These were 86% of the 3502 pages in 1984, which included the supplement of 508 abstracts from annual and regional meetings. Pages in this volume were more than double the number in Volume 57, 1974. Distribution of contents is in Table 1. In the editorial process we sought through recommendations of capable and conscientious reviewers to accept meritorious, important, primary scientific papers, and reviews of dairy science for publication. Then we worked with authors to make those reports whole stories with little fragmentation, easily and quickly comprehensible to readers through careful organization with language giving the meaning in the fewest and least unambiguous words. ! have been pleased by the assistance and cooperation in this effort. Also pleasing has been perpetuation of an integrated publication of all aspects of dairy science. Especially rewarding has been the return of manuscripts from a few fields that withdrew publication from the Journal of Dairy Science. We have benefited also by the frequent contributions of scientists from countries other than the United States and Canada. Most frustrating has been my inability to achieve an attractive interval from receipt of manuscript to its publication (Table 2). The trend of means is less favorable than the trend of the more meaningful but harder to obtain median; but for a sample 4 mo of 1977 and 1984, medians for days from receipt to approval were nearly the same, whereas median days from approval to publication increased about 90 days. The beginning of the backlog of approved manuscripts was when postal fees were by pounds and fees too expensive to exceed 190 pages per issue. Our struggle intensified with the holding of manuscripts for the anniversary issue in 1980-1981. From that backlog we have not recovered even with less restrictive smaller increments of postal fees.

The process after approval of manuscripts is too slow to enable insertion of the needed number of manuscripts to achieve favorable times to publication, once an attribute of the Journal of Dairy Science. Most papers in the December issue were approved in July. In every year but two (Table 2) we have approved more papers than published, and receiving the most manuscripts ever (461) in 1984 will add challenge. Terminating the allowable 6 consecutive years on the Editorial Board are E. G Hammond, P. G. Keeney, D. H. Kleyn, L. L. McKay, J. K. Miller, H. A. Morris, H. D. Norman, M. J. Paape, C. E. Polan, R. L. Richter, and J. W. Young. Polan served from 1972 to 1977 and 1979 to 1984, reviewing 198 new manuscripts and 36 revised. Also leaving the board after one term are J. H. Britt and T. E. Kiser. We appreciated their help. The Journal depended on C. A. Ernstrom, Associate Editor for Dairy Foods; Cheryl Nimz, Technical Editor, and staff for preparation for printing; C. J. Cruse, Executive Secretary, R. A. Schmidt, Assistant Executive Secretary, and staff for administration and business; E. O. Herreid, Editor Emeritus, for subject index; and D. B. Emmons, D. G. Braund, J. B. Holter, R. C. Lamb, E. M. Mikolajcik, E. M. Kessler, T. Kristoffersen, C. V. Morr, and T. Richardson, Journal Management Committee. We are grateful for their help. Also we needed and appreciate the help of these reviewers of up to four manuscripts:
