Journal w e l c o m e s new advisor International Journal of Fatigue is pleased to welcome Dr Julia E. King as an Advisory Editor. On 1 September 1987 Dr King moved from the University of Nottingham to the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, UK. She is commencing the second year of a fiveyear appointment by British Gas and the Fellowship of Engineering as Senior Research Fellow. The appointment involved working with a research group of six in the fields of fatigue and fracture, with particular interests in aeroengine materials and current and future materials for the gas industry. Dr King obtained BSc and Phi) degrees from the University of Cambridge. Post-doctoral research at Cambridge on the fracture toughness of aircraft undercarriage steels and the fatigue behaviour of powder-formed low carbon Astroloy was followed by an appointment as lecturer in the

Hungary, on 19-24 September 1988. The format of the meeting will be similar to that of previous ones in the series, consisting of plenary lectures, oral presentations in parallel sessions and poster presentations. Problems in fracture, fatigue and creep will be discussed, in particular: • • • •

A symposium on Factors that Affect the Precision of Mechanical Tests will take place in Bal Harbour, FL, USA, on 12-13 November 1987. The four symposium sessions are titled: 'Precision/accuracy of standard test machines', 'Unique/special tests and machines', 'Uniaxial and multiaxial testing and fixturing', and 'Instrumentation, environmental and load rate effects and statistical analysis'. There is no fee to attend the symposium, but pre-registration is recommended. A complete programme can be obtained from: Hans Greene or

Scott Orthe3, ASTM, 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia, P A 19103, USA. Stress Analysis and the Micro '88 (SAM '88) will be held on 26-27 April 1988 at Brunel University, Uxbridge, UK. The meeting comprises an exhibition and conference. The exhibition will allow authors and vendors of software for stress or structural analysis, designed to run on micros costing up to about £10,000, to demonstrate their programmes. Time will be generously allocated to the exhibition to gain maximum benefit from the demonstrations.
