T

HE MARJORIE HULSIZER COPHER award is the highest award bestowed upon a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The 2012 award is presented to Kathleen C. Niedert, PhD, MBA, RD, CSG, LD, NHA, FADA, in recognition of her contributions to the Academy and to the profession. Throughout her amazing and multi-faceted career, Niedert has been a true champion for promoting and expanding the role of the registered dietitian. For nearly 4 decades, Kathleen Niedert has exemplified excellence in practice, promoted the dietetics profession, and advanced the profession through exceptional leadership. From her first involvement in Iowa’s MidEast District Dietetic Association, to her tenure on the Consultant Dietitians in Health Care Facilities Executive Committee culminating as chair in 19992000, to her current appointments within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Niedert has served the nutrition and dietetics profession and the Academy with great dedication. Kathleen C. Niedert service on all levels of the Academy, but especially in national-level positions, is exemplary. Testimony to Niedert’s integral commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the Academy are the numerous contributions that she has made in the arenas of dietetics education, creden-

tialing of professionals within the Academy, allied health collaboration, governance, and as a representative of the Academy in numerous outside alliances. She has been one of the editors of four consecutive editions of the Academy’s publication, Nutrition Care of the Older Adult, and was involved with the creation of the specialty certification in gerontological nutrition. She has promoted inter- and cross-disciplinary teams and alliances to improve care to seniors, and her work in senior health policy has assured quality health care for many. Her devotion is evidenced by active participation and affiliations with numerous advisory boards, officer positions, and committee work. Niedert has accomplished much, yet always takes the time to develop warm relationships in a caring manner. She is an excellent leader and team player, and has always been a sterling ambassador for dietetics practitioners among other health professions and the public. She has worked tirelessly for the profession and the Academy and is truly deserving of the Academy’s most prestigious award.
