Naomi Trostler, PhD, RD, FAND, Receives 2016 Copher Award
T
HE MARJORIE HULSIZER COpher Award is the highest honor presented to a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This award honors a member who has contributed to the Academy through extensive, active participation and service to the profession of nutrition and dietetics, both within and outside of the Academy. The 2016 award is presented to Naomi Trostler, PhD, RD, FAND, for her dedication to the advancement of the dietetics profession, both in the United States and internationally. With a career spanning nearly 50 years, Trostler’s passion for advancing the profession through practice, research, and leadership, along with her pioneering efforts to promote nutrition and dietetics globally, have created new opportunities for dietitians to improve the profession worldwide. Trostler trained in the United States as a dietitian and served as a professor in the Hebrew University’s Rehovot campus in Israel, educating and mentoring students for over 30 years. Her dedication has spanned the globe through her work in the United States, in Israel, and with the American Overseas Dietetic Association (AODA). She was involved with developing and directing the Dietetics Practice Based Research Network, along with assisting in the development of the terminology used within the Nutrition Care Process (NCP). Trostler has been involved in national and international dietetic associations for over 3 decades. As early as 1992, she was a member of the International Organizing Committee and chairperson of the Scientific Committee for the XI International Congress of Dietetics. In 1994, she served as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Dietetic Association. In Israel, she was a true trailblazer,
working to establish licensure for dietitians, serving as chair of their national association, and serving as a representative to the European Federation of Associations of Dietitians. Her sphere of influence extends beyond the borders of any country. As a researcher and internationallyrecognized leader in nutrition, dietetics, research, and the NCP, Trostler has authored nearly 50 professional articles in peer-reviewed publications and presented over 70 presentations at national and international scientific conferences. She is regularly invited to speak around the world on the topic of NCP and the International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology, and helps dietetic associations in Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Asia to implement these tools in their home countries. From 2003-2011, Trostler was the AODA delegate to the House of Delegates. She also served on the American Dietetic Association’s Position Papers Committee from 2004-2006, followed by 2 years on the Diversity Committee. In 2009, she took over the role of Scientific Committee chair for AODA, followed by Awards Committee chair, and recently transitioned back to the role of HOD delegate. Trostler has inspired members of the Academy, her affiliate, AODA, and other international dietetic associations to advocate for themselves and the profession of nutrition and dietetics.
