India: Prayag – masterbatch Prayag Polytech (headquartered in New Delhi) is nearing completion of a 10,000 tonnes/y plastics masterbatch plant at Dahej (Gujarat, about 100 km south of Vadodara/Baroda). The company already has three units for making up to 50,000 tonnes/y of masterbatch at its complex at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan (70 km southwest of New Delhi). Three years ago, it was reported that Prayag was going to raise capacity at Bhiwadi to 70,000 tonnes/y, but this plan seems to have been scaled-back. (See also 'Focus on Pigments', Mar 2014, 5). Korea, South: Solvay – silica Solvay has commenced construction of a new plant for making highly dispersible silica (HDS) at a site in the Saemangeum district of Gunsan in Jeollabuk-do province on the mid-western coast of South Korea. The plant will have a capacity in excess of 80,000 tonnes/y and it is expected to come on-stream in mid2017. When it is fully up and running, Solvay will close down a substantial part of its silica capacity at its Incheon site. This site is located within an area designated for future residential development. Mr An Nuyttens (President of Solvay's Silica business unit) said: "This new production platform at Gunsan will be dedicated to silica innovations for Asia. The commissioning of this plant, together with the silica research facility, part of our new research centre at the Ehwa University campus in Seoul, means that we are well placed to speed up innovations in close cooperation with our regional customers.'' The Gunsan plant will produce the most advanced grades of HDS, including Efficium, which offers higher productivity and greater flexibility in producing energysaving passenger car and truck tyre compounds. Solvay Silica has nine plants and four silica research facilities worldwide. Silica is widely used as a carbon black replacement in the vehicle tyre industry; as a key ingredient of exfoliants, toothpastes and other personal care products; in high-performance membranes; and in animal nutrition.
