The F m m s h N a u o n a l Groups of the International Tunnelhng Assocmtion (ITA) and the Internatmnal Society for Rock Mechamcs (ISRM) mwte constructors, designers and operators of large rock caverns, and all other persons interested m the subject, to an International S y m p o s m m on Large Rock Caverns to be held at the Helsmkl University of Technology, August 25-28 1986 The symposium is sponsored by the ITA

Apphcattons zn ctvtl and mmmg engineering The largest rock caverns for permanent use m hard rock can be more than 30 m m width. Mine caverns can have spans over 60 m In weaker rock although caverns usually have smaller dimensions they can be more d~fficult to design and construct. The s y m p o s m m ~s intended to promote underground construcuon by offenng an o p p o r t u m t y for specmhsts workmg m different geological conditions to meet and learn from each other's experiences

Call for papers Papers on the techmcal, economical, legal and environmental aspects of underground construction are invited The problems of planning, mvesugat~on, design, construcuon, m o n l t o n n g and use of large rock caverns can be treated Contributions on completed works are especially welcome An abstract m Enghsh, 200-500 words, with the names and addresses of the authors and md~cat~on for which session the paper Is intended, should be submitted to the secretarmt of the symposium by 15 September 1985. The authors wdl be notified on the acceptance of their abstracts and mstrucuons for typing the papers wdl be distributed by 30 N o v e m b e r 1985 The deadhne for the papers to be included m the preprlnts, which wdl be d~stnbuted prior to the symposmm, is 15 March 1986 A volume of d~scusstons during the s y m p o s m m wdl be prepared The first reformation bulletin has been pubhshed and ~s avadable from the secretanat The second bulletin containing detads of the programme, registration forms and information on fees wdl be pubhshed m N o v e m b e r 1985 For further reformation contact.

Apphcattons m commumty development In modern c o m m u n m e s m a n y activmes and funcUons can be placed m underground caverns. The new uses of underground space reqmre interaction between people responsible for c o m m u m t y planning, those responsible for the design and construction of underground caverns and also the users of the installations. The symposium IS mtended to faohtate discussion between d~fferent interested groups and professmns.
