Downtime avoided for petrochemical plant with bespoke leak sealing design Probable downtime at a petrochemical plant, as a result of worsening leakage from a heat exchanger expansion bellow assembly, was successfully averted thanks to specialist online pressure leak sealing by Furmanite. An unusual, purpose-designed clamp was used to seal the leak on a steam system at a petrochemical plant in Pakistan. The leak was believed to have been caused by bellow design limitations and threatened to become worse with time as the high pressure steam cut through the bellow joint. Furmanite designed a clamp to encapsulate the full 1 m diameter bellows and meet the temperature, over 300ºC, and pressure of 90barg which sealed onto the 24 inch formed shell on either side of the bellows. The metre long, four tonne clamp was glanded at one end to allow for the thermal expansion and movement of the bellows assembly, which allows movement up to 22 mm in length, during operational cycles.

Designed as two clamp halves bolted with 3.5 inch bolts and a circumferential seal and half joint seal at one end, to accommodate the pressure and temperature, the clamp was injected at the glanded end with Furmanite valve compound. This provided effective sealing but, critically, without curing, thereby allowing movement while ensuring the seal. A permanent support structure was designed to accommodate the additional load bearing considerations involved. Installation of the clamp presented further challenges, due to the size and the congested environment in which it was fitted. The fitting of the bolts was particularly difficult given the small clearance hole allowed and precision fits involved. Laser alignment by rugged equipment John Crane has launched Lase-A-Lign Ex a rugged and durable shaft alignment system designed specifically for use on process plant. The system is quality assured to a high standard and is designed to minimize the risks involved in on-site operations. It is made from stainless steel and hard anodized aluminum and meets ATEX directive (EEx ib IIC T4, II 2 G) for use in potentially explosive environments, such as those found in the petrochemical, oil and gas and pharmaceutical industries. The equipment is intrinsically safe and the entire construction is durable and able to withstand tough external environments. It is impact resistant and also resistant to corrosion and leaks. 4

Peter Simpson, product manager in the John Crane couplings division explains: ‘Because we know that measurement systems are all too often used in environments that are anything but clean and dry, Lase-A-Lign Ex is shockproof, dustproof and waterproof, in accordance with IP66 and IP67 regulations. ‘The quality management system has been approved by international testing and certification body Nemko AS. It also comes with a four year warranty.’ Contact: John Crane EAA, Nash Road, Trafford Park, Manchester M17 1SS, UK.
