Letter to the Editor
Letter to the Editor regarding the importance of residency programs I read with interest the article by Falcone and Rosen entitled The Importance of Residency Programs Size and Location on American Osteopathic Board of Surgery In-training Examination Outcomes, published in the Journal of Surgical Research [1]. Although the information provided by the authors is quite interesting, in comparing and contrasting the osteopathic surgical in-service examinations with the American Board of Surgery in-service examinations, there is an erratum that needs to be noted. The American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS) does not construct, develop, nor administer the inservice examination. Therefore, the title of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery in-training examination (AOBSITE) is in error. The American College of Osteopathic Surgeons via the Residency Evaluating and Standards Committee has a subcommittee for the in-service examination. Thesubcommittee is responsible for the development, construction, and psychometric validity of that ex-amination. In contradistinction to the American Board of Surgery, our Board is charged with initial certification and osteopathic continuous certifications but does not participate in residency training or in-service examinations. It is important to note that the result of their article is quite interesting in which geographical differences were not found within the osteopathic programs, which is in contradistinction to previous data found by the allopathic surgery programs.
Program size, however, does seem to have statistical correlation. I thank you for your attention to this.
