KSB’s half-year orders hit record high

T

he KSB Group has posted record high order intake and orders on hand and significant increases in sales revenue and EBIT for the first six months of this year. Both order intake and orders on hand reached the highest levels that the German pump and valve manufacturer has seen in its almost 150-year history, with order intake up 9.4% to E1306.5 million and orders on hand 8.7% higher at E1535.8 million. Sales revenue rose 8.3% during the same period to E1141.9 million, while earnings before finance income/expense and income taxes (EBIT) more than doubled from E21.4 million to E45.2 million. Almost all markets and regions contributed to the growth. In the Pumps segment, order intake was up by 9.4% or E74.0 million to E867.1 million, boosted by the improved project business in the industry, water/wastewater and energy markets. The Valves segment recorded the largest increase in percentage terms with an order intake up 13.8% or E24.7 million to E203.9 million. The main growth drivers were cryogenic butterfly valves for LNG tankers and valves for flue gas cleaning systems for ships. The Service segment saw a 5.4% upturn in order intake to E235.5 million. KSB says that there was particularly high demand for services in the general industry and chemicals/petrochemicals markets. “The measures we initiated last year are starting to bear fruit,” said KSB CEO Dr Stephan Jörg Timmermann. “Given the good results achieved in the first half of the year and despite the emerging economic slowdown sparked by growing trade disputes, we are confident that we will meet the order intake, sales revenue and earnings targets set for the 2019 financial year.”

Lewa establishes subsidiary in Australia

L

ewa GmbH has set up a sales office in Perth, Australia. Lewa-Nikkiso Australia Pty Ltd is the German pump company’s 15th subsidiary. The new office means that Lewa is now represented on six continents. “Until now, we have provided service to our customers in Australia and Oceania from Singapore,” explained Daniel Wong, managing director of Lewa-Nikkiso Singapore Pte Ltd. “This often involved long, costly travel, especially since orders in these areas have recently increased.”

August 2019

NEWS/IN BRIEF Through a joint effort with Lewa’s Singapore location, customers in Oceania will now be served more quickly from Australia. The company is also planning to set up a business and customer service centre in the medium-term. Lewa says that there has been significant growth in Australia in recent years, particularly in the petrochemical, oil and gas and mining industries. The company has also gained orders in agriculture and the dairy and food industries and would like to become active in Australia’s renewable energy sector. “Across all industries, we currently have a market share of 10–15% down under. Our goal is to increase this to 25–30% over the next few years,” said Wong. Lewa has been successful in energy and mining in particular, with numerous installations of Lewa ecoflow and triplex process pumps. Sealless Nikkiso centrifugal canned motor pumps have also been used in multiple cooling and air conditioning projects. “Based on these projects and the market acceptance that they have established for us, we want to provide our existing customers with even better and faster service now,” said Wong. AxFlow expands in Irish valve market

A

xFlow Ireland has acquired Irish Pumps & Valves Ltd, a supplier of valves, actuators, pumps and ancillary equipment to the wastewater, power generation and process industries. AxFlow Ireland has a well-established presence in these industries through its pump distribution and service facilities, and by adding valves to its portfolio it will be able to offer pump and valve packages for large scale projects. “This acquisition will enable AxFlow Ireland to enter the valve market in the wastewater sector and thereby capitalise on Irish Pumps & Valves’ strong position,” said AxFlow Group CEO Ole Weiner. “The strategy of adding valves to our product portfolio has already realised benefits in the food sector with the introduction of SPX products. This is a big opportunity for us to grow valve sales in sectors which AxFlow Ireland has never explored. We have a good spread across all markets with our pumps so adding valves to our offering is obvious next step in growth.”

August 2019

Established in 1998, Irish Pumps & Valves is based in Bagenalstown, Co Carlow, where it stocks a range of gate, non-return, ball and butterfly valves. The portfolio also includes pneumatic and electric actuators, flanges, fittings, gaskets and fixings. The company offers full assembly and test facilities at its Carlow premises, as well as an onsite customer service backup. Helen Murray, the owner of Irish Pumps & Valves, welcomed the acquisition. “There are considerable synergies between both companies and together we can expand into industry sectors where previously we were under represented,” said Murray. “Irish Pumps & Valves has a good geographical location outside Dublin, so this will provide AxFlow with the opportunity to grow another service facility for its pumps business, as well as developing service and testing for valves,” said Stuart Flood, managing director of AxFlow Ireland. AxFlow Holding AB recently bought Induchem Group, an Irish specialist provider of fluid handling solutions including valves, pipe solutions, mixers, pneumatics and pumps (see Pump Industry Analyst, July 2019). AxFlow’s other acquisitions this year have included Generalcontrol Spa, a Milan, Italybased distributor of positive displacement (PD) pumps, instruments, vacuum pumps and compressors (see Pump Industry Analyst, June 2019); VIP Tehnika, a Slovenian company specialising in the sale and service of pumps for water and wastewater applications (see Pump Industry Analyst, May 2019); and Innva AS, a Norwegian distributor of valves and piping solutions for water and wastewater (see Pump Industry Analyst, May 2019). In Brief • KSB has launched a new e-commerce platform for its customers in Sweden. The www.ksb.se website has been completely redesigned and now offers key product information for making purchasing decisions including technical data, documents, prices, delivery times and availability. Integrated functionality enables users to buy KSB products and spare parts online. This requires MyKSB Business access that users can sign up for on the website. All business transactions with KSB can be processed online via the customer’s MyKSB Business account, including order tracking and quotations. After the trial phase in Sweden has ended, KSB will switch to the new e-commerce channel in all countries over the coming years. The main goal is to increase sales of standard products and spare parts. www.ksb.se • This year’s VDMA International Rotating Equipment Conference for Pumps, Compressors and Vacuum Technology will take place 24–25 September in Wiesbaden, Germany, where the focus will be on how digitisation is changing pump, compressor and vacuum technology. The plenary lecture will be given by Dr Matthias Fankhänel, former senior vice president, Centers of Technical Expertise at BASF SE, who will give an insight into how manufacturers and users can master the challenges posed by digitisation. The conference will include sessions on digital transformation, data management, condition monitoring and reliability. The ‘digital twin’, a first OPC UA companion specification for pumps and vacuum pumps, enabling communication from pump to pump (horizontal) and pump to control (vertical), will also be demonstrated. www.introequipcon.com and www.vdma.org • For the fifth consecutive year, Ingersoll Rand has been included in the FTSE4Good Index Series that measures the performance of companies demonstrating strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. “Being listed on the FTSE4Good Index for the fifth consecutive year affirms our commitment to ESG practices,” said Michael Lamach, chairman and CEO of Ingersoll Rand. www.ingersollrand.com
