Spaniards, including the author of the book I have before me, try too hard to excuse even variations which are unacceptable to the well-bred South American, fearing that they will otherwise give the impression that they consider South American language as merely a degeneration. And so the author's rather servile attitude is tiresome at times. So is his hesitation to express an unfavourable opinion on any detail in Cuervo's work. Apart from that, GonzAlez de ia C~le's extensive general knowledge of linguistics, which gives him plenty of material for comparison, makes the remarks which date from his lengthy stay in Bogota well worth perusal. And so there is, after all, reason to commend the act of reverence towards a man who did much to raise education in Columbia to a high level, which was the motive for publishing anew this series of somewhat outdated lectures.

In the book under consideration he reports on a lexieological enquiry which he and some of the co-workers conducted in 1958-1960 at the department of Dialeetology of the Instituto Caro y Cuervo, in the district of Bolivar. For this he worked from a questionnaire which was published by the Instituto in 1957 to the purpose of someday working out a language atlas for the, whole Colombian area. But except for that, many notes were made outside the framework of the questionnaire concerning what was :found in houses and other buildings. The study is extensive and ~thorough.
