TRAINING AND EDUCATION IN GASTROENTEROLOGY List of Available Training Programs he Manpower and Training Committee of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) compiles a list each year of training programs in gastroenterology and liver disease in the United States and Canada. Programs are listed at the request of the program directors, primarily for the purpose of assisting physicians desiring training in adult or pediatric gastroenterology. No scrutiny or other evaluation of the programs has been made by the AGA, and publication does not imply approval by the Association. Furthermore, the AGA is not responsible for the accuracy of each program’s accreditation status. Many of the training programs listed are not accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The American Board of Internal Medicine accepts training only in ACGME-accredited fellowships or residencies. For a listing of the ACGME-accredited programs, please consult the current Directory of Graduate Medical Education Programs published by the ACGME. Because some programs may have been accredited subsequent to publication of the Directory, the programs themselves should be consulted to determine their current status. Pediatric programs are listed separately because there is no current mechanism for review and accreditation of pediatric

T

programs. Postgraduate training programs in gastrointestinal pathology are also listed. Applicant: The current list is based on information supplied by the program directors. Both fellowship and residency programs are listed. In many instances the type of training offered is the same regardless of the title, usually a mixture of clinical and research training. In those programs, the different titles may reflect the source of funding. In other instances the term ‘‘fellowship’’ may imply strictly research training and ‘‘residency’’ may mean that only clinical training is offered. The individual programs should be contacted also for a specific description and for an application. When available, the name and address of the person to contact have been listed. Because many programs have deadlines for receipt of applications in the fall, it is suggested that you make your inquiries in the summer 2 years before you wish to obtain a position in a program.

This listing will be updated frequently at www.gastrojournal.org
