the Department of National Defence. Access to this network will assist Canadian industry, commerce and trade to bid successfully for international contracts by providing a coordinated national system of measurement standards compatible with those of our international trading partners. Success in international trade of high technology products, communication and navigation networks, and a host of other technological commodities is highly dependant on accurate measurements to assure high product quality and compatibility. NRC's Laboratory for Basic Standards continues to do R&D and maintains primary measurement capabilities for the basic standards of length, mass, time, electricity, temperature and luminous intensity. It will also continue to provide a first-order calibration service of instruments and reference standards associated with these and other related physical quantities. The National Research Council, Canada's leading science and technology agency, develops knowledge through its own basic and directed research programs. NRC also provides a wide range of services, facilities, technology transfer programs and collaborative research opportunities to help Canadian industry maintain its high standards of excellence and international competitiveness. Lactaid Inc. has announced that Jan Distributing of Richmond Hill is marketing Lactaid Lactose Reduced Milk throughout Ontario. The Lactaid Milk is produced and distributed in conjunction with Ontario's four major dairies: Heritage Farm Dairy; William Neilson Ltd.; Beatrice Food Inc.; and Ault Foods Ltd. It is available in almost all major supermarkets throughout Ontario this month. The lactase enzyme and lactase treated milk is used to prevent symptoms of lactose intolerance, a condition experienced by 15-20% of all Canadians. The inability to digest lactose results from a deficiency of the lactase enzyme which occurs naturally in the body. Lactase breaks down milk sugar (lactose) into simpler forms - glucose and galactose - that can be easily absorbed by the bloodstream. When lactose is not present, symptoms ranging from gas and bloating to cramps Can. Inst. Food Sri. Technol. J. VO!. 21. No. 5, 1988

and diarrhea generally begin 30 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion. For further information contact Jan Distributing toll free at 1-800-387-5711. (Toronto area, call 886-2489.)

Hapman Conveyors has introduced a portable helix which includes a control package that quickly and easily interfaces with other equipment. Designed for use in food processing plants, the unit integrates the seasoning transport conveyor with the existing volumetric screw feeder mounted over the seasoning dispensors. The unit is mounted on casters allowing it to be rolled into position near processing equipment. Then by attaching two electrical connectors, the Hapman Clean Machine™ delivers product on demand from level controls mounted in the hopper. When sufficient material has been conveyed to the volumetric feeder, the conveyor automatically shuts down until demand calls for repeating the cycle. A Vibrator is timed to cycle while the conveyor is running to induce material flow on sluggish material. Since it does not run continuously, the possibility of packing the material is eliminated. When the conveyor hopper material level is low, a light mounted at the operators eye level is automatically turned on, thus it is not necessary to remove the hopper cover to check the material level. All necessary starters, wiring and conduit fixtures meet code requirements and are conveniently mounted on the conveyor's portable base assembly. The Hapman Clean Machine is constructed of stainless steel and food-grade polyetheylene material approved by F.D.A. and U.S.D.A. These units are available in various sizes to meet most applications. For further information contact: Hapman Conveyors, P.O. Box 2321, Kalamazoo, MI49003 (or call 616-343-1675).
