Louisiana Oil Spill Oil spilled into the Tante Phiner Waterway when 10 000 gallons of oil leaked from a waste pit in an industrial facility in Venice, Louisiana. The spill occurred when a beam surrounding the pit was breached. Oil continues to leak from storage tanks and pipelines in the pit contaminating approximately 2.5 km of shoreline. Clean-up operations are being coordinated by Riedel Peterson Environmental Services, New Orleans and funded by the US Oil Pollution Act 1990 Liability Trust Fund. Booms, skimmers, vacuum trucks and sorbent pads are being used to remove oil from the water and shoreline. It is planned to drain the pipelines and pump the oil from the tanks as soon as possible. The facility has not been operated since August 1990. US Coast Guards are presently trying to identify the owner.
Round-the-World News Canada Oil spilled into a harbour at Port au Choix, Newfound-
land when a subsea pipeline fractured due to fluctuating temperatures. The leaked oil became trapped in ice making its recovery difficult. Clean-up teams cut a trench around the contaminated area and put a log boom in place to prevent it breaking off and floating away. Oil was recovered by drilling holes in the ice and removing the freed oil with absorbents. It is anticipated that more oil will become recoverable when the ice melts later in the year.
India An 8 mile long oil slick in the Bay of Bengal is believed to have resulted from a vessel flushing bilges. The slick was accompanied by what official sources described as a "sheet of garbage" and lay about 30 miles south of New Moore Island across the international boundary between India and Bangladesh. It later moved closer to the West Bengal coast before breaking up and hitting the shore. The mix of oil and rubbish pointed to the oil being the result of deliberate release. As a result, authorities in the area are to step up vigilance and the Coast Guard instructed to take action against vessels discharging oil near the coastline.
