raw materials by expanding its profitable percarbonates business. A key element in this is MedAvox, a joint venture with the Montedison Group of Italy established in 2001. MedAvox is building a new percarbonate plant in Bussi, Italy, which is due to come on stream in 2003. This joint venture is expected to report sales of around €50 M/y. In parallel with this, a new percarbonate plant will be constructed in Rheinfelden, Germany. Capacity at each of these facilities will be over 50,000 tonnes/y. Formulations HLL relaunches Rin Supreme Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) has reintroduced its detergent Rin Supreme bar with reportedly a new path-breaking patented technology called Pure Clean. The company has spent Rup 200 M for the new formulation, which does not contain any mined ingredients. HLL has introduced the new Rin Supreme in Tamil Nadu and introduction in other parts of South India would follow. Rin Supreme will be introduced across India by end 2002. HLL has priced the new Rin Supreme slightly costlier at Rup 8.5/15 gm, Rup 16.5/250 gm and Rup 25/400 gm bars. HLL has changed the shape, fragrance and packaging of the bars. HLL plans to promote Rin Supreme on the ‘newness for longer’ and ‘no minerals’ platform through a multimedia communication approach. Trains spill chemicals in Louisiana In Pineville, LA, US a Kansas City Southern train carrying sodium percarbonate ruptured early in May 2002. The train was on route to Procter & Gamble’s plant at Pineville from OCI’s facility in Decatur, AL, US. Sri Lanka soap saga BCC Lanka Ltd, a soap and coconut oil producer based in Sri Lanka, intends to allocate £180,000 for automating its coconut oil production facility. It is also undertaking an expansion of its soap production facility for the relaunch of its entire product line, including the Sovereign Bar and Suvendra soap brands. The upgrades will allow the firm to increase its coconut oil production by ten-fold to 4000 bottles/day. It may also raise the firm’s share of the Sri Lankan soap market to 60%.
