Fel-Pro oil-pan gasket addresses repair issues on Hyundai, Kia engines

S-based Federal-Mogul Corp, which supplies products to vehicle manufacturers and servicers, is offering engine rebuilders and automotive repair technicians – who have struggled to achieve a reliable seal when reinstalling the oil pans on many 2009–2012 Hyundai and Kia V6 engines – a new one-piece replacement gasket. Available in complete oil-pan and conversion sets, this problem-solving new gasket design is among more than 100 new parts recently added to the firm’s Fel-Pro product line. Approximately 250 000 3.3L and 3.8L DOHC V6 engines from Hyundai and Kia feature an RTV silicone bead, rather than a conventional gasket, along the oil-pan flange surface. Applying a replacement bead and properly installing the oil pan for a leak-free seal can be exceptionally difficult in the aftermarket repair environment, says Federal-Mogul. The new one-piece oil-pan gasket is manufactured from a die-cut, high-density fibre sheet that is fully encapsulated in a black latex rubber coating. This coating prevents engine oil from wicking through the gasket body, providing a long-lasting, leak-free seal.

.L. Gore & Associates of Newark, Delaware, USA, has expanded its line of Gore Skyflex aerospace materials for sealing applications by developing a low-tack adhesive that makes it easier to readjust sealants in complex structures during installation procedures. Shortly after installation the adhesive strengthens so the sealants withstand mechanical stress and maintain their protective performance for multiple open/close cycles during production and maintenance. The firm says that unlike traditional sealants that can become brittle and crack when exposed to liquids, its low-tack sealants provide a barrier against fluids, protecting against corrosion caused by exposure to moisture and liquids such as water, solvents and de-icing fluids. Under compression, these lightweight, durable materials maintain consistent seals that are resistant to cut-through and abrasion, further extending their useful service life. According to Andreas Eckert, Global Product Manager, Gore Skyflex, this new low-tack adhesive used in these sealants was engineered specifically for structures requiring thin sealants and for those with complex shapes. Eckert commented: ‘This new adhesive has an initial low-tack when first applied, so it is easier to adjust and reapply the sealants when working with complex surfaces. After only a few hours, the adhesive strengthens to provide the same level of durable, long-lasting protection as our other adhesives.’ ‘Like all Gore Skyflex aerospace materials, this new low-tack sealant does not require curing, so aircraft availability is significantly increased.’
