Announcement

Marine Structures--Design, Construction and Safety, Volume 1, No. 1, Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, Barking, England. Price: £55 for three-issue volume 1 subscription. (ISSN 0951-8339) This is the first issue of a new journal from Elsevier covering the general area of marine structures including ships, fixed and mobile offshore platforms, submarines and submersibles, pipelines, sub-sea systems and coastal structures such as piers. I feel I should declare my own interest in the journal as I am a m e m b e r of the editorial board and will therefore concentrate on giving an indication of content. The stated aim is to concentrate on papers related to research, design methodology and fabrication, but to give priority to contributions which are likely to have an impact on design. The journal has three editors, Professor Faulkner from the University of Glasgow, Professor Mansour from the University of Berkeley in California and Professor Ueda from Osaka University in Japan. The first issue includes four papers, a book review and a calendar and the format appears to be very similar to that adopted for the JCSR. The papers relate to pipeline buckling from Denmark, probability-based fatigue design from the USA, materials from the UK, and compression plate design from Portugal. A free sample copy can be obtained from the publishers and this would certainly be the best basis for readers to judge whether the content reflects their own interest. Clearly the cost will make the journal primarily a library proposition, although offshore companies must be the main potential subscribers.
