This compound is relatively unsown in plastics. The Boron Nitride Div. of the C~bo~ndum Co., Amherst, N.Y. is publicizing the use of its “Combat“ BN powder available in various mesh sizes. Rhein Chemie has developed a test to assess the surface activity chemicals using the DOP number. This has the advantage that it correlates well with hardness and viscosity measurements. The second key is particle size and this must be looked at with the DOP number. Work at Rhein Chemie has shown that no crystals smaller than 60 microns are visible in their materials, giving the best extrudate. This suggests that the powder surface has energy sufficient for covering and wetting with the polymer binder if the diameter of the crystal is less than 60 micron. A final aspect of polymer binding to be considered is processing. Some accelerators may form agglomerates during incorporation into the binder mixing shear. This type of material has to be processed in low shear mixers and such should be specified when making the additive systems.
