MATERIALS RESEARCH SOCIETY SYMPOSIUM SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR NUCLEAR WASTE MANAGEMENT December i - 5 , 1986 Boston M a r r i o t t Hotel~ Copley Place, Boston, MA This symposium offers s c i e n t i s t s with an i n t e r e s t in the technical aspects of nuclear waste management an opportunity to present and exchange recent scientific results. As the tenth symposium in t h i s series, the p r o g r ~ w i l l feature invited papers reviewing technical progress in a v a r i e t y of subject areas with an assessment of the a b i l i t y of the work to provide the information required to achieve waste disposal. The focus of contributed papers w i l l be the demonstration of, and license requirements f o r , long-term performance of waste package components from short-term d a t a - - e x t r a p o l a t i o n methods~ mechanistic understanding, v a l i d a t i o n of models, etc. Subjects considered appropriate for presentation include: • m m • •
Materials i n t e r a c t i o n s in a r e p o s i t o r y Waste form performance (glass, spent f u e l , others) Container design and corrosion Radionuclide behavior in a r e p o s i t o r y environment Radiation e f f e c t s on groundwater chemistry, waste form performance, and corrosion m Natural analogs for waste package components e Disposal of non-high level radioactive waste m Materials c h a r a c t e r i z a t i o n and selection. Papers are s o l i c i t e d in these and other appropriate areas Special consideration w i l l be given to those papers where the authors relate t h e i r presentation to the focus of the Symposium as noted above. Prospective authors are requested to provide one of the symposium chairmen with a "review summary" by June 1, 1986, for peer review. Acceptance w i l l be made on the basis o T - s # - l ~ and technical content with only new and unpublished work to be favorably considered. The summary can be up to two pages long, including f i g u r e s , tables, and/or references. Indicate whether an oral or poster session is preferable. In addition, provide a separate half-page abstract in the format prescribed in the Society's "Preliminary Announcement and Call for Papers". Abstracts w i l l be d i r e c t l y reproduced in the f i n a l symposium program. Presentations may be published as e i t h e r a f u l l - l e n g t h paper or a shorter synopsis in a volume of the MRS Symposium Proceedings Series. F u l l - l e n g t h papers w i l l be subject to a s t r i n g e n t referee process and approval of an abstract and presentation of a paper w i l l not guarantee publication of a f u l l - l e n g t h paper.
