Hon. Secretary : Dr. W. F. Twining McMath (M.O.H., Fareham U.D). A meeting of the Southern Branch was held at the Public Health Offices, The Castle, Winchester, on Friday, March 4th. Fifteen members were present, the President occupying the chair. Dr. Alexander Capes, of the Mount (Hampshire County Council) Sanatorium, read an excellent paper on " Bovine Tuberculosis in Man." He stated that approximately 2,000 children died annually from bovine tuberculosis and many more were crippled or disfigured. Dr. Capes stressed that pasteurisation of milk carried out efficiently, with a prepasteurisation standard of cleanliness, and milk bottled by machinery and delivered sealed to the consumer, should cause all milk-borne disease to disappear. There followed a lively discussion in which Drs. Williamson, Semple, Wilshaw, Cronk, Kelf, McMath, Hart, Roberts and Pirrie took part. Dr. Capes suitably replied. On the proposition of Dr. Kelf (Basingstoke), and seconded by Dr. Williamson (Portsmouth), Dr. Capes was thanked for his exceedingly able paper and for the discussion it stimulated. Dr. A. B. Williamson then gave a synopsis of the Agriculture Act 1987, and Dr. H. L. Cronk described the position in the County of Hampshire. There being no further business the meeting closed.

A meeting of the Group was held at 1, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, on Friday, February 25th, at 5.80 p.m. In the unavoidable absence of the President the chair was occupied by Dr. Agnes Nicoll (Past-President) and 25 members and friends attended. The minutes of the meeting held on January 20th were confirmed and signed. A paper was then read by Dr. Ethel Cassie, M.D., D.P.H., entitled" The Child Kept Apart From His Parents." It is hoped to publish this paper in full. The following took part in the subsequent discussion and questions--Drs. Agnes Nicoll, Makepeace, Makland Radford and James ; Dr. Cassie replied. Birmingham). Hon. Secretary : Dr. Agnes Young, A.M.O.H., (Warwickshire). A meeting of this Sub-Group was held on Saturday, February 12th, in Coventry. In the morning the Chairman, Dr. Cassie, accompanied by 16 members, spent a evry interesting hour and half in the factory of Courtaulds, Ltd. The processes of manufacture of wood pulp into artificial silk thread was explained while the members were conducted round the works. Conditions under which women worked were noted particularly, their surgery and rest rooms admired and the spacious and well equipped canteen inspected. Sherry was served by the firm at the close of the tour and, before leaving, Dr. Cassie thanked the staff for the privilege of visiting the works and for the time and spent a very interesting hour and half in the factory ing and enjoyable. At 12.30 p.m. the members were received at the Council House, Coventry, by the Mayor, Alderman Miss Arnold, and the Mayoress, Alderman Mrs. Hughes. Cocktails and sherry were served and the Mayor welcomed the visitors to Coventry. Dr. Cassie expressed thanks to the Mayor on behalf of the SubGroup. At 1.15 p.m. a luncheon was held in the King's Head Hotel. Nineteen members attended. Dr. and Mrs. Massey were the guests of the Sub-Group on this occasion. At 3 p.m. the members proceeded to Gulson Road Combined Clinic. Twenty members attended and Dr. Cassie was in the chair. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and adopted, Dr. Massey, M.O.H. for Coventry, addressed the meeting on " Maternity and Child Welfare Work." He touched on such subjects as infant mortality rate, maternal mortality rate, birth rate, new midwivery services and their effect on domiciliary midwifery, the general practitioner and the future medical services of the country. Discussion followed this interesting survey, Drs. Cassie, Hirst and Young taking part. Dr. Hamilton Wood then proposed a vote of thanks to Dr. Massey. This, seconded by Dr. Anderson, was enthusiastically given by the meeting. The Clinic was then inspected and its manifold purposes noted. Tea was then served and brought to a close a very happy and interesting day. The Bug N u i s a n c e . - - I n view of the great attention which is being paid at the present time to the disinfestation of houses and furniture from the bed bug, the Royal Sanitary Institute has decided to hold a further course of instruction in disinfestation work. This course will commence on Monday, May 16th, and will last for two weeks. Full particulars can be obtained from the Secretary of the Institute, 90, Buckingham Palace Road, London, S.W.1.
