PRACTICE OF INTERNAL MEDICINE, 1989 May 1 to 5 , 1 9 8 9 Kahler Hotel, Rochester, Minnesota This program of lectures, case presentations, panel discussions, and open question-and-answer periods is designed to provide updated information on advances in general internal medicine for primary-care physicians and internal medicine subspecialists. The multidisciplinary approach to patient management will be stressed in presentations by members of the faculty of the Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. In addition to sessions devoted to gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonary and allergic diseases, nephrology, infectious diseases, hematology/oncology, rheumatology, cardiovascular diseases, and vari­ ous other topics of special interest, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in their choice of one of three different interactive group workshops offered daily, Monday through Thursday. MAYO MEDICAL LABORATORIES March 29 to 31,1989 Physician's Office Laboratory Workshop Rochester, Minnesota This 2V2-day program will review the basic principles and procedures used in physicians' office laboratories. Infor­ mation will be presented on venipuncture, processing of specimens, urinalysis, hematology, coagulation, chemis­ try, microbiology, pregnancy testing, and identification of crystals in body fluids. Three special topics of the seminar will be (1) legislation that may affect office laboratories, (2) CPT coding for laboratory procedures, and (3) prepara­ tion for laboratory inspections. Other topics of interest include safety and infection control, workload recording, cost accounting, care of microscopes, quality control, and information on products such as kits and instruments available for office laboratory practice. The presentations will be conducted by pathologists, administrators, and medical technologists from the Mayo Clinic.

May 17 to 19,1989 Specimen Identification and Transportation: Laboratory Transportation Systems, Bar Coding, Central Processing Kahler Hotel, Rochester, Minnesota This 2V2-day seminar is designed for laboratory personnel, administrators, and facility engineers who are interested in the identification, processing, and transportation of medical specimens in a hospital or clinic facility. Atten­ dees will learn how to select, operate, and maintain a laboratory transportation system, gain new insight about electric track vehicles and pneumatic tube systems by watching them in operation, become familiar with guide­ lines from the National Committee for Clinical Labora­ tory Standards for the transportation of specimens, and learn how bar coding can be used for the identification of patients as well as for laboratory procedures. Other topics of discussion regarding central processing will include training of personnel, performance appraisals, manual and computerized data management, handling of stored serum, and quality assurance.
