MAYO MEDICAL LABORATORIES WORKSHOPS September 10 to 12, 1992 3rd Annual Practical Surgical Pathology Conference Rochester, Minnesota Designed for practicing surgical pathologists, this course will feature discussions of common but difficult diagnostic problems encountered by pathologists in everyday practice. After a brief review of the case history, participants will study microscopic slides. The faculty will then present the differential diagnosis and discuss the disease entity in general. Topics of discussion will include the following areas: bone and bone marrow; breast; gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and gynecologic disorders; the head and neck; lung; lymph nodes; nervous system; soft tissue; and thyroid gland. September 17 to 19, 1992 Bleeding and Thrombosing Diseases: Back to the Basics Rochester, Minnesota Basic aspects of the complex processes of hemostasis and blood coagulation will be presented at this workshop, which will focus on five common laboratory assays: platelet count, bleeding time, activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, and thrombin time. With use of a case-presentation format, the faculty will review bleeding and thrombotic disorders within the context of a simple scheme of hemostasis, followed by open question-andanswer sessions. The goal of the seminar is to provide an understanding of the mechanisms of hemostasis, various screening tests, common hemostatic disorders, limitations in the evaluation of thrombotic diatheses, and principles of anticoagulant therapy for physicians in any discipline. STUDY PATIENTS NEEDED: ANTIEPILEPTIC DRUG TRIALS (IRE 190-90)
The Epilepsy Service of the Mayo Medical Center is conducting studies to evaluate the efficacy of new antiepileptic drugs in patients with uncontrolled partial epilepsy. Study patients must be in generally good physical and mental health, and they must be free of progressive neurologic illnesses. For patients accepted into the study, the costs of the associated care, including clinic visits, study medications, and laboratory tests for the research, will be underwritten by research funds.
