Her leadership and devotion to the profession evidenced by her service as president of the Kentucky Dietetic Association when she was a driving force for professional licensure. She served on Kentucky’s Board of Licensure and Certification for Dietitians and Nutritionists from 1995 to 2003, as chair from 2001-2003. Her dedication to the profession by joining with Marianne Smith-Edge to establish the Breeding–SmithEdge scholarship for students in the University of Kentucky School of Human and Environmental Sciences who are pursuing a dietetics internship with a focus in business and consultation. Her exemplification of the highest standards for the profession. She is a quiet source of enthusiasm and a true entrepreneur, developing nontraditional businesses that enhance the role of the registered dietitian, enabling her to use the dietitians’ skills in a unique manner and expanding possibilities for dietitians throughout the profession. Her commitment to allied organizations, including over 30 years working with the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities on committees, presentations, and articles. She is an active member of the Kentucky Assisted Living Association, serving as a resource for dietary issues, promoting the value of the registered dietitian. Her forward thinking approach to practice through the formation of a task force to establish a realistic interpretation of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for the senior population. She empowered the Task Force by delegating control to the chair, providing support, and allowing the Task Force a voice in reporting their findings.

She is at the forefront working with ADA to determine the best methods to include the work of the registered dietitian in the electronic health record and developing innovative Web-based education materials and Web sites.

Being a champion for the expanded roles for registered dietitians, which helped the American Dietetic Association (ADA) delineate multiple levels of practice for dietetic professionals in diabetes care. ● Being a pioneer of the advanced practice multidisciplinary credential Board Certification in Diabetes Management. She chaired the ADA practice group Diabetes Care & Education (DCE) task force on the Standards of Professional Practice and Performance. During her tenure as president, American Diabetes Association (ADbA), Health Care & Education, the ADbA Nutrition Recommendations for Diabetes and the National Standards for Diabetes Self Management were revised and updated. Both documents showcase the role of the registered dietitian in Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Her leadership positions in the ADbA, American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), and DCE, including serving as an invited author or reviewer for most of the significant diabetes position papers and technical reviews from the ADtA and ADbA for the past 15 plus years. Kulkarni has over 300 professional publications to her credit. She has received the highest professional honors from the ADbA, AADE, and DCE. Her exceptional contributions to diabetes education initiatives, including her early championing of carbohydrate counting, which she pioneered 23 years ago as an option for people with diabetes, and today is a standard for MNT in diabetes management. Her ability to build this incredible career while never losing sight of what matters— her family and friends and above all the people with diabetes whom she continues to serve with a passion that will always be ongoing. Her exceptional leadership in the development and implementation of the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Healthier US School Challenge, the School Meals Initiative (SMI), local Wellness Policy initiative, and Team Nutrition Training Grants. She has been chair of the School Nutrition dietetic practice group, and was instrumental in obtaining an ADA grant for a Web-based learning course to train registered dietitians in school nutrition programs. Her passion for and her ability to further the dietetic profession by mentoring dietetic students, serving on two university dietetic program advisory committees, and insisting on registered dietitian applicants while forming a special nutrition unit in the Child Nutrition division of the Food and Nutrition Service, USDA. This unit has responsibility for forming national nutrition policy, and providing training and technical assistance to Child Nutrition program personnel at all levels. Her service to the health and wellness of the nation’s children, including formation of a national school wellness coalition of federal agencies and school health organizations; and her state and local community volunteer service. She is a nationally recognized expert in the school nutrition field, and is sought as a speaker, advisor, and government liaison both nationally and internationally.

Since beginning her career, Raguso has contributed her expertise to the expansion and advancement of the dietitian’s role in health care. She has worked to promote specialty and advance practice, expand the scope of practice of registered dietitians, create nutrition fellowships, and support development of dietetic technicians. Her ability to think logically and critically, providing thoughtful insight on important matters including policy development, strategic planning, and educational program development. Her outstanding talent and dedication as an educator and mentor. She remains devoted to fostering
professional education that both develops and supports expert preceptors and highly competent practitioners. Her commitment to life-long learning demonstrated by the numerous programs she has offered that provided hundreds of hours of continuing professional education to several thousand dietetics professionals. Her ongoing service to the community, including involvement with the American Heart Association and her longstanding work as a member of the Nutrition Committee of the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland. Her commitment to and vigorous pursuit of her personal vision to catalyze greater health of people, communities, and the nation through sustainable food systems which produce foods that are health promoting, green, fair, and accessible to all. ● Her contribution to the professional leadership including serving as editor for the Iowa Simplified Diet Manual, legislative monitor for the Iowa Dietetic Association, chair of the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition Dietetic Practice Groups, member of the ADA Sustainable Food Systems Task Force, and director of the Food and Society Policy Fellows Program at the Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute, among many others. Her ability to analyze and translate scientific knowledge into agriculture, food, and nutrition policy resulting in significant real world impacts, including her work on the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. Her work on the Iowa Food Policy Council leading the Task Force making recommendations to close the gaps in the food security safety net. Her demonstrated capacity to network with groups, leading to beneficial collaborations and building of bridges and relationships among diverse players in the food, agriculture, and health communities. Being a brilliant visionary who has heightened awareness of how food and nutrition impacts the world and has promoted the value and scope of practice of the registered dietitian. Being a dynamic role model to thousands of dietitians by generously sharing her knowledge and passion for food and nutrition as well as encouraging the skills needed to continue the work that she has started.
