This book sponsored by the Air Force Materials Laboratory of the Air Force Systems Command of the U.S.A. aims to provide a comprehensive systematic text covering all aspects of the interdisciplinary subject of friction and lubrication in metal deformation processes. It is largely a digest of developments since World War II contributed by J. A. Schey, C. H. Riesz and S. Kalpakjian. The book attempts to fultil a dual role, that of a textbook for the newcomer to the subject and a reference book for the specialist. Fundamental information bearing on metal-working lubrication is covered first, followed by specific surveys of industrial metal forming processes. Thus, to provide a background relevant to the subject, the first four chapters discuss friction effects in metal working processes, friction, lubrication and wear mechanisms and lubricants. Chapter five deals with lubricant properties and their measurement and discusses the very important role of lubrication and friction in tool wear, surface finish and appearance of the finished product. The subsequent chapters present a detailed, critical survey of present knowledge on metal-working lubrication in rolling, wire drawing, hot extrusion, forging, cold forging, cold extrusion and sheet metal working. These latter chapters follow a general plan : introduction of the subject, discussion of relevant friction and lubrication phenomena, survey of applicable lubricants and then a specific treatment of lubrication and lubricants for the various workpiece materials. A useful summary is added at the end of each chapter. The requirements of the specialist have been adequately covered with a vast collection of references to published information listed at the end of each chapter and indexed under the author at the end of the book. The newcomer to the subject, however, could well be overwhelmed by the volume of information presented. Much of the metal working theory could possibly have been condensed or even omitted as this is dealt with in detail in many books on plastic theory. Also, concepts developed from fundamental research on friction, lubrication and wear which are primarily related to elastic deformation may have been presented more concisely thus leaving the detailed discussion to those aspects related to plastic deformation which are highlighted. The book is methodically arranged, clearly printed, well and simply illustrated and very readable. It is a good reference book but the size and price will tend to make it an addition to the reference library rather than a personal book for the specialist or a text book for the student or newcomer to the subject.
