FOCUS subsequently integrated its operations into the Engineered Materials division. Those operations included the plant at Bergheim (30 km west of Cologne) producing up to 145,000 tonnes/y of Martinal fine-grained precipitated alumina trihydrate. (See also 'Focus on Pigments', Mar 2016, 6-7). Now, Huber has declared that it will raise ATH capacity at the Bergheim plant by 10%, bringing total capacity here to an estimated 160,000 tonnes/y by 3Q 2017. Mr Jerry Bertram, Vice President & General Manager of Huber Fire Retardant Additives business unit said: "This investment is the first in a series of expansions planned for Bergheim as we begin implementing our longer term strategy for the business.'' Huber is a global leader in the production of fine precipitated ATH and magnesium hydroxide, which are among the most important non-halogenated fire retardants. Huber has four ATH manufacturing sites in North America and two in Europe. A 20% expansion of the company's ATH plant at Bauxite, AR (40 km southwest of Little Rock) was completed in March 2016. Germany: Lanxess – iron oxide pigments Lanxess has been celebrating the 90th anniversary of iron oxide pigments manufacture at its Krefeld-Uerdingen site, which it inherited as part of the Bayer demerger, completed in January 2005. More than 13 M tonnes of iron oxide pigments have been produced here since the plant started-up in 1926. Between 2005 and 2015, Lanxess invested approximately €420 M in the Uerdingen site, of which €200 M was dedicated to the pigment production facilities. At a ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary, Mr Jörg Hellwig (Head, Inorganic Pigments business unit) announced the Besser Lernen initiative for educational institutions and youth organisations in Krefeld, with a fund of €50,000. Mr Hellwig said: "We wanted to find a special way of thanking the city for the decades of outstanding cooperation we have had.'' Back in the 1920s, Dr Julius Laux (Head of the Aniline Plant) began searching for ways of using the iron oxide pastes that were a waste product of aniline manufacturing. In 1925, he

discovered that the presence of salt solutions led to the formation of intensely coloured oxides that were ideal for use as pigments. Within 18 months of this discovery, a commercialscale production facility started-up, producing 1200 tonnes of iron oxide pigments in 1926 and 5000 tonnes in 1927. By the early 1960s, production at Uerdingen was running at more than 100,000 tonnes/y. The brandname Bayferrox was adopted in 1976. The Uerdingen plant began making pigments in granular form in the 1990s. Today, Lanxess offers a range of more than 100 distinguishable shades of iron oxide pigments, sold to about 5000 customers around the world. Total coloured pigment production here is currently in excess of 280,000 tonnes/y – mainly iron oxide pigments, but also including some chromium oxide green pigments. Lanxess employs about 800 people at the Uerdingen pigment plants. In addition, Lanxess has inorganic coloured pigment plants at: Porto Feliz (Brazil), Starpointe Burgettstown (US), Branston (UK), Vilassar de Mar (Spain), Sydney (Australia), Shanghai and Ningbo (China). The company's global pigments capacity is cited as 375,000 tonnes/y. The Inorganic Pigments business unit employs about 2000 people worldwide. pigment plant in Tamaulipas province, 15 km north of the port of Tampico). Production from the new line is expected to ramp up steadily, with full capacity of 200,000 tonnes/y being achieved over the next several years. Mr Bryan Snell (President, Chemours Titanium Technologies) said: "The expansion we celebrate today demonstrates our confidence in, and our commitment to, the future of the TiO2 industry. We are proud to be the global leader in producing high-quality TiO2 pigments. We have the lowest sustainable TiO2 production costs in the world and we anticipate reducing our overall costs of manufacturing TiO2 by at least $20 M per annum.'' Mr Jose Antonio Chouza (Commercial Director, Latin America) said: "In addition to increasing the future production capacity of our plant, this expansion has generated thousands of local jobs. During the three-year construction project, 3000 contractor jobs were created. The expansion also means 200 new direct jobs, one-quarter of which are filled by women.'' Mexico: JSR/Elastomix – carbon black masterbatch Elastomix, part of the Japan Synthetic Rubber (JSR) group, plans to spend $5.1 M on building a new carbon black masterbatch plant at Irapuato (70 km southeast of Leon, Guanajuato province). Construction work is due to commence in January 2017, with completion scheduled for 2018. JSR has not yet released details of capacity, but this is estimated at 6000 tonnes/y. Mexico is now the world's seventh largest country, in terms of annual automobile production. Vehicle manufacturers headquartered in Japan, as well as those headquartered in Europe or the US, are investing in manufacturing capacity in Mexico, which will boost the country's demand for rubber for tyres, hoses and automotive components.
