Typesetting systems incorporate security codes Two new microprocessor-based typesetting systems have been independently launched by Typecraft Systems and Typeshare Ltd. The Typeshare system provides real-time telephone typesetting with a choice of 75 different faces including 900 pi characters ranging in size from 4½ pt to 72 pt and, the makers envisage, will be able to accommodate 300 faces. Facilities include correction and editing facilities, changing of faces

and sizes, justification around an illustration and expansion or contraction of copy to fit an existing space. It is also programmed to hyphenate in 12 languages. The system is also claimed to provide office data processing functions including access to Prestel and word processing. The Typeshare workstation consists of 6809-based M FT 42-function terminal, keyboard, 6809-based dual floppy disc drive and daisy-wheel

with an analogue comparator via an &bit D/A converter. Information is stored on coil reference, coil length, number of turns and winding pitch. Storage is on 32k of RAM with battery back-up using lithium batteries with a claimed life of 2Z years. The operator uses a keyboard to enter the coil reference, length and wire size with the number of turns, traverse stopping position and batch quantity. The microcomputer then calculates the required pitch using a preset 'fill factor' and displays the required number of layers and resulting corrected fill factor. Once the information has been established for a particular coil, the machine automatically resets to reproduce this result when the coil reference is entered by the operator. This system permits the operator to load, unload and terminate coils while winding proceeds in the opposite position. A range of ancilliary equipment is available from Rotawinder including computer controlled terminating as well as skeining, taping soldering, teg insertion and robot loaders and unloaders. Instant setting of parameters for the winding of coils at 45 000 revolutions per minute has been made available by Rotawinder Ltd..This coil winding system works on Rotawinder's own winding machines and is based on a ZS0 running at 2.5 MHz interfacing

printer. Access to the central typeshare computer is via the Preste[ internal modem; which produces a facsimile oi the typeset materials within about six minutes of despatch. The copy is stored in the central computer for 10 days after which the client can be supplied with the data on floppy disc.

Self-contained system The PET-based system from Typecraft Systems is a self-contained data entry and editing terminal for high-speed phototypesetting machines. The package, called the WCT 96, includes a keyboard/VDU, single disc drive and the software necessary for typesetting functions. This software is a modified Wordcraft word-processing program, and is protected by a 'dongle' an Americanism which means a software protection device, which is attached to the disc drive and incorporates a numeric code. No loading can be carried out unless the dongle is in position and the program contains ,L loop for continuous checking of the code. The program is protected from transcription. Although originating in the US, the system has been extensively modified in the UK by Typecraft. The PET keyboard has been changed and now includes typesetting codes and European symbols such as accents. The operating system too has been changed so that these characters can be displayed and edited. This software is incorporated on ROMs in tandem witil the standard PET ROM~ and a flick of a switch engages one or the other. Using a multiplexer, [ourPE I s can interface to one typesetter and up to four multiplexers can be cascaded with four PETs each. Both the systems incorporate security systems, the Typecraft system with the dongle and the Typeshare system with a security cocle required for connection to the cenuai computer. Prices for these two systems are £7500 for the -rypeshare workstation and £2500 for Typecraft's PET and software basic system. (7~,peshareLtd,
